My betta seems to have some tiny white dots on his fins.THey are really tiny though. And he has one under his eye,and in the light it looks kinda like glitter. What should i do?I have no meds right now. Thanks for any help.
Gold Ryu
The bowl is about a gallon maybe a tiny bit less.I have gravel and a plant in it.I added my fish in on Sept 3rd.So it's only been in there for a week. Some of his food has sunk into the gravel. But he eats fine.Should i completely clean the bowl out?I also add a pinch of salt in to see if it helps.

There shouldn't be any lefover food in the tank..it will just rot and cause a lot more ammonia. How often do you do water changes? Can you test the water?? Are the dots under his eye white or "peacock" colored shiny? My betta has the reflective peacock spots under his yey, and those are normal, but fins shouldn't have spots like that. What temp is the bowl?
Gold Ryu
Once a week about a cup full.Should i clear out the whole bowl?I don't have test kits right now but i'll try to get it soon.Peacock spots?Do they look kinda like ich but is shiny? The temp is around 68 to 70 degrees f.

In any unfiltered bowl under 2 gallons, I recomend a compleat change every 2 weeks, ie take fish out, dump out water, clean out gravel, add new water, add fish. All my betta bowls are barebottom for this reason.

Any way you can get us a picture?

I clean out completely my betta bowls once a week. I use super ick cure by aquarium pharmaceuticals but only used it in aquariums not bowls.

Ryu, in a small bowl, the cupful is what you keep. You catch your betta in a cup, rinse out the whole bowl under the tap, add aged, treated water, and when the cup and the bowl are the same temp, you can reindroduce the fish back to the bowl with his cup of water he is used to.

If you feed him sparingly, you can get away with cleaning this way once a week. If not, and who can resist the greedy little mouths, you'll need to do it twice a week or at least syphon out 50% of the water, from around the gravel, mid week and top the bowl up and do a full change at the weekend.

Have you got a bucket labelled FISH WATER ONLY waiting in the laundry or in some corner somewhere already filled for water changes? Have you got a water conditioner that removes chlorine and chloramine? It's a quick job if you're all prepared.

Betta breeders dump their jars every two days and completely replace the water. In indonesia where they breed them in bottles they just put a sieve over four bottles at a time, dump the water, and when they've done this to a row of maybe thirty bottles, leaving the fish lying in the bottom, they walk along the top of the bottles (they have hundreds lined up) and fill the bottles with a hose (they don't have chlorine or chloramine and their water is always warm). They do hundreds of bettas in an hour this way.

Yeah i have aqua safe.Is that good? Thanks for all the help i really appreciate it everyone. Oh and i'll try to get a good pic since the dots on him are small and not too much are on him.Should i change the water now? It's 9 PM here right now.Or should i wait tommorrow?
Ponderosa Power
I meant like the color of a peacock when I described the spots (and not a white peacock tongue.gif) I don't think that is what is going on, but its strange that they are shiny. Have the shiny dots always been there?

Hmm..I do a 50% water change every three days, and on the third water change I do a 100 percent since I don't have a syphon just for him. No filter.
Gold Ryu
No just the one below his eye is shiney. So should i do a complete change right now?I've only changed one cup of water in 8 days... ohmy.gif

Ponderosa Power
I'm afraid of 100% water changes...I'm always scared they might stress the fish out, especially if it is sick. Personally I'd do a 50% water change tonight, and then do another 50% tomorrow night.
Gold Ryu
Well i changed all his water except one cup of old water. And my dad promised to buy me a ten gallon if i get my grades up in school. smile.gifI'm so excited! What are compatible with a betta in a ten gallon? Also i made a food schedule for him:

Sunday, peas...Monday,Flakes twice...Tuesday,flake, freezedried brine shrimp...Wednesday,flakes twice..Thursday,flakes,freezedried brineshrimp..Friday,flakes twice..Saturday freezedried bloodworms.

Is it a good schedule or should i give less brine shrimp?

a pinch of what KIND of salt? If it's anything other than "Aquarium salt" you need to do a 100% water change immediately.

That being said, if I were you, I'd use aquarium salt and some sort of ich meds. Nox-Ich is a good one.

smile.gif Yabbie gave some very sound advice on Water Changing for Betta's. Most Betta's will learn to live with and appreciate their water changes. If done correctly, they really shouldn't stress out the little guys too much. Just make sure to match the new water with the water that he's in.That could certainly cause enough stress to have him break out with Ick or something. As for the pinch of salt, everyone's "Pinch" may be a different amount,I'd advise on figuring out exact amount of water and treating the tank correctly with a measured amount. smile.gif

Hey Devs, do you have a suggestion for a measurement of "a pinch" of aquarium salt? I'm going to try a little salt with my own betta because he is having severe rot problems. I was advised with .5 tsps per gallon, is this right? Should I start with .25 one day and add the other 2.5 the next? Thanks smile.gif How is Aquarium salt different than other salts?
Gold Ryu
I use the salt in mykitchen it doesn't have iodine though. Is that ok?It has salt and calcium in it.It's about a gallon just a small amount smaller. If i can get a good shot can i email someone the pics?Cuz now i think maybe it isn't ich but i wanna make sure.
mickey85
if I were you, I"d get real aquarium salt.
Gold Ryu
I've got the salt, i add one speck in every time i change the water.I don't want to add too much.
Gold Ryu
Oops! I forgot to mention that he is fine now. All the spots have fallen off! biggrin.gif
