Full Version: Does Algae Change Ph?

Hi all,

Been doing some research online about keeping algae in the tank and maintaining "green" water.

I've read some conflicting things. Some people say algae can change the PH, which I must admit has been my experience.

I like having the algae however, my reasoning is that while I'm trying to keep my water as clean as possible, I like the idea of my tank replicating a pond type environment as much as possible, in order to create a more 'natural' biosphere for the fish.

Has anyone else had experience with algae changing their water ph?

Just like any other plant, algae consumes carbon dioxide (CO2) during the day (which raises pH) and produces CO2 at nite (which lowers pH). So you'll see a daily swing in pH. How large the swing is depends on how much algae/plants and your KH (buffering capacity). You may want to run an airstone at nite to gas off CO2 from the green water.
