ok. tonight i got 2 dwarf qouramis, 4 neons, and 3 black stripe tetras. the tank is 10 gals, cycled, ready to go. i put them in there after about a 20 min floating/adding water period. i came up a hour later to find that A- none of the tetras are together and B- one neon tetra is dead, and another is missing. WHAT HAPPENED???? i looked in the filter, the missing one is not in there. and also, another one of my neons is swirling around, floating and stuff. grr im so mad! what happened? how can i stop it????

oops and i just realized this is the GF disease section. sorry guys. anyways, my mom is convinced that the gouramis ate the one that is missing. can this be true? i dont even think they could fit in their mouth.

a while back my older brother had a tropical tank with 1 gourami and several mollys. One day we found that 1 molly was missing. We thought that it was so weird because we didn't know the gourami was capable of eating another fish. Well the next day we looked in the tank again and this time a headless molly was floating in the water. So I guess that its possible that your gourami ate your tetra. your your flaoting tetra was possibly attacked. I dunno my opinion

Sometimes fish will eat dead fish even when they wouldn't have actually KILLED them... so maybe something else killed the neons. Could be something in your tank, or maybe they were already sick.

Not grouping together might be normal... danios are "schooling fish" and mine usually completely ignore each other, but seem happy enough. 4 might also be a fairly small school... not sure how many of those people usually put together.

I'm really sorry about your loss... good luck with the remaining guys!

I have found the neon tetras to be a bit tricky. Often they die early on, however, the surviving ones often live a fairly long time. I have had better luck with cardinal tetras. They look much the same as neons, but have more red on them. Perhaps, you could try them next time. They will school with the neons. I think you should have a least 7 in your school. I have always found that I did better with odd numbers. Strange.

Good luck.

BTW, I printed out a really good article on tropical fish, a good one, bad one, type of thing. I will try and find it and pass the URL on to you.

thanks! btw, i did have 7...now ive only got three. the black striped ones and the neon are together so i guess they are "schooling" as best they can. and my gouramis are darting around the tank. i dont understand what is going on in this tank...its been cycled for 7 months now. i think i am gonna go with more of the black striped ones...they seem more stronger.

I agree, I think the black ones are stronger, too, and they will school with the neons.

I have also had good luck with rummy nosed tetras biggrin.gif
