Full Version: What's Wrong With My Betta?

The past coupel of days, my blue betta's been kind of droopy. I knwo it's not water quality, because I keep his water fine, and he hasn't been exposed to any other fish, water from other tanks, etc. to pick up any parasites or what have you.

Also, he's all but lost his color on his body. He's gone from beautiful blue to brown. It's not like it's something that's covering his body either, it's his body itself that's changed colors.

I'm wondering if maybe it's just old age? I have no idea hwo old he was when I got him, but I've had him for several months now and I know that Bettas don't live as long.

He still eats ok and swims around some, but isn't as active. Also, he hasn't built a bubble nest in a few weeks now, and he used to build them all the time.

If you're sure his water's fine, then maybe he just needs something to perk him up.. mine used to do that- Try a change of diet, a new plant in his tank, or even just show him a mirror a few times a day, and generally play with him.

I've heard that one way of telling a betta's age is by the appearance of a beard ( a white one, near the gill-flares, or whatever they're called ). Not sure how its done, but my betta had one when I bought him, and he only lived a year with me sad.gif

He seemed to be doing better yesterday, but when I woke up this morning and he was dead, so... sad.gif

I just wish I knew the cause.

So sorry to hear about your betta, Kelli! sad.gif
They usually lose their color due to stress, like a trip home from the store or something. When I got mine from Thailand, I unpacked the bag and saw a terrible pale looking fish, when he was supposed to be a bright red, but he got his color back after a day in a nice tank with his girlfriend and some bloodworms.
Maybe it is old age then, most of the bettas, especially in larger chain stores, are at the latter end of their live expectancy. Usually bettas can get quite old, around 2 years, but you gotta buy them young...Unless its a REALLY stunning looking fish, I leave the big ones in the stores.....
