We set up our new 10 gallon tank Saturday night. Starting yesterday we noticed a wierd smell. I wsa going through the fridge, trash, ect looking for the source. I am pretty sure it's the tank. When you smell the water up close it isn't as strong but I think it is permeating into the air. The tank is real cloudy which I heard happens at first. When setting up the tank we used water conditioner(de-chlorinater) and stress coat. Any idea what is cuasing the smell? Anyone else have this happen?

That's odd, you're the second person today who has mentioned a weird smell in a new tank.

I'm wondering if you can smell like a plastic or industrial smell? This sometimes occurs because of the components and gravel etc, not being used before. Have you ever noticed the weird smell of a new TV when it is first used? Something similar.

The only other thing I can think of is perhaps you overdosed on water conditioner. This is a sulpha based product and can smell like rotten eggs in high doses.

Either way try doing a 50% water change (double check on the water conditoner dosage instructions) and see if the situation improves.

My husband said it smelled kinda like cat urine. Wierd! It isn't industrial smelling. I will change some of the water and see!
