now that i have a new tank for my goldfish, i'm thinking of getting a new filter for the old one and putting some fish in it after i get it to cycle. is there any kind of tropical fish that you can have at least two in 5 gal? also my ph is 8.4, i really like guppies but i think my water might not be good for them. i've read they need 1 gal per inch, i don't know how big they get. also the only place close to me to get fish is wal mart so my choices are limited, but i think they do have quiet a few different kinds there.

You could keep a few guppies in there

They only get about an inch, and are very pretty. The downside is that they don't live very long and are often kinda old when at the petstore. Oh yes, and guppies will be okay with a high pH. Tropicals aren't my forte tho, so I can't really offer more help thatn that. If you want, you can keep one of your bettas in there. If you have/get it a filter, you can keep a small apple snail, ghost shrimps, or African Dwarf frog in there as well if the betta you keep in there has a more peaceful temperment.

I have 2 African Dwarf Frogs in my 5 gallon

I read they do okay in ph from 7.2 - 7.6 but I don't know if they'd do okay in such a high ph. Somebody more experienced with them could probably tell you. I'm new to ADFs

(Some one experienced with ADFs=not me) Lol, I wasn't thinking and forgot about the pH. I've never had them either. Snails only do well in a high pH and hard water, so that's an option. Small snails need about 2.5 gallons each, so the five gallon would be perfect for one of your bettas and a snaily if you have a cover for the tank and your interested in going that way. I was SOOO close to getting a snail, but then I realized that my hood didn't cover the hole tank and they would crawl out.

aww i looked up those frogs to see what they were, i've had those before! when i was a teenager and just started with aquariums. they were so little and cute, i loved them and now i know why they died. i didn't feed them worms

i don't think i'm ready to deal with worms, dead or alive

i really want guppies, so i think i'll try those. i just wanted to ask first to be sure, i don't want to kill them. my friend had guppies before in a 2 gal and they had babies, i thought it was really cute, but she doesn't know anything about fish so she may have been doing the wrong things too.

my tank doesn't have a complete cover, so no snails for me and i only think they are cute from afar. i don't want one close to me, lol

Lol

You could probably keep 3-4 guppies in a five gallon, depending on how good your filter is. Are you going to get some guppies from your friend?

LoL I'm okay with the frozen bloodworms for the frogs, but I don't know if I could chop up a live one *shudders* I have before when I was little to feed my grandma's oscar when it was little, but I was really little and didn't care then LoL Frogs need their tanks fully covered too or they might try to escape

Guppies are so much fun! I have 7 in my 10 gallon right now (6 little tiny common guppies I got for 15 cents each LoL and my adult male fancy). There are so many different types! At the lfs out this way I found the Blue Tuxedos, Fire Flamingos and 3 other fancy types (I forget the names). Such pretty fishies

Good luck with your 5 gallon!

well i got two guppies

i also bought a new 5 gal tank instead of using my old one

i was gonna do a fishless cycle, but i changed my mind since i've been doing pretty good with my goldfish. i saw some frogs there, they were the wierdest thing! i don't know what they were, i didn't see a tag for them. they were fat and i guess about three inches and white!! they were so freaky looking but cute

i also saw some shrimp, they were neat too. the poor guppies didn't look too good. i picked the most active ones with no signs of sickness. are the blue tuxedos white with blue tails? and Fire Flamingos white with bright neon pink tails? cause they had those, but they looked sickly. if it wasn't for that i would have picked those, they were so cute.

At the LFS down here, the Blue Tuxedoes were half a dark blue and the other half a black. The Fire Flamingoes were very very bright, almost pure red

Very very pretty! The ones you seen sounded pretty also! Poor little sick fishies

It's sad when you go into a store and see all the sick/dead fishies in the tank still

Sounds like African Clawed Frogs. Those things get HUGE. But they are cute...
I never had much luck with guppies, I hope you do better.

thanks

i'm probably just gonna save it away somewhere incase i need it for something. i really don't like it, too hard to clean cause of the way it is made.

a perfect set-up would be 3 female bettas !!!!

Aug 24 2005, 09:10 AM
really? you can put the females together? one of my guppies is already dead, the female is hanging on, but i'm not too sure if she will make it cause she doesn't eat. i noticed last night all the guppies in that tank that i got them from are now dead or almost dead. my water levels are fine so it can't be the water q.

There is no way I would put less than 5 female bettas together. I've found that any less than that and you don't have enough to disperse the fighting. One always ends up dead with 2-4 F/B's.
You should think about white clouds. you could keep 3-5 in there, they really don't need a filter or heater if you keep the water clear enough, and they are very peaceful and fun to watch.
Other thoughts would be 5-6 dwarf cory cats (hilarious to watch), a male betta, 3 guppies (2F, 1M), or 3-4 dwarf puffers. If you wanted to go brackish, 1-2 knight gobies or a few bumblebee gobies would be neat.

i kinda like the cories too. i've always been drawn to those, maybe i'll try those if the guppy doesn't make it. if she does i'll get a couple more guppies. those dwarf puffers are cuties, too bad they eat worms

killies are another group that I forgot about...Think of them as egglaying guppies.

Aug 24 2005, 09:25 PM
you could do a pair of platies, or like 4-5 neon tertras, um.. a pair of cory catfish would be cute!

you could do one swordtail... a female or male betta and like 3 little neons... or a betta and a pair of pygmy cories....
Do it brackish and do a trio of bumblebee gobies!

fun! a pair of killies? or dont do fish, do a terrarium and do a trio of general tree frogs, but they have to eat crickets...
a trio of cherry barbs, pair of endlers, a dwarf gourami, triops (got mine from walmart, one of the funnest instant life pets EVER!!! XD and they say only use a tiny tank, but I found out bigger tanks are better, just start them in a tiny tank!) Seamonkeys, German ram, shell dwellers (small cichlids that hide in shells), ghost shrimp...
o.o im tired now

Wow! Thats a lot of possibilities! *resists urge to go out and buy a ten gal* You make me laugh

I wouldn't reccomend german rams. I've kept them before, and they are never truly happy unless they have a mate or more. They are a social fish that will set up really interesting relationships and social structures. If you are going with either kind of ram (german or bolivian) go with at least 20 gallons and get 4-6...same thing with shellies.

yea that's alot of choices, i don't even know what most of these things are

my other guppie died so i just put a betta in there for now til i decide.

I would highly reccomend killies. But, if you find a bigger tank, look up rams, they're definitely cool fish.
here's a german:

and here's a bolivian:

there is also a genetic mutation of the german, called (for obvious reasons) the gold ram:

of these fish, if you really want one, get a bolivian. In a good tank, they will flourish and become beautiful, but they are a bit hardier. the german and gold rams are pretty disease prone, and I have found that, at least here in Indianapolis, they come straight from the LFS with internal parasites that you can't see, and don't notice until they end up dead 3 days later and you have a dead $10 fish on your hands.

those are pretty, i think they have the bolivian at walmart, but i won't spend that much money on a fish especially at wal mart, lol.
