Full Version: Success In Raising Fish In Green Water?

Has anyone here tried raising goldfish in green water conditions like how hobbyists do in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Japan? I was browsing through raffles gold and they are all big supporters of this though I don't know if people here in the states do this much or at all. Their fish are all really beautiful with excellent coloring and are as fat as soft balls. I read that one of the pitfalls of where these fish are kept, since it is a perpetual summer there, is that the fish don't live longer than 5 years. I wanna know if anyone here has had success with this method. Since I'm in Hawaii, a land of perpetual summer, I could try this...although I'd like to have my fish live longer than 5 years. 406.gif rolleyes.gif

I know Maniacaholic uses green water....I can't get any! I leave my tank lights on or have the winow open 18 hours a day...and not even the faintest hint of algea. Sheesh.

of course I like green water, my pom pom is growing almost an inch a weak, 5 years max? that's cause of the heat the goldfishes will go through in the summer, goldfishes in the cooler areas mature more slowly and live longer and a goldfish in the warmer area can mate at the age of 1!

the biggest problem with green water "where are my fishes?"

It's winter here but I have lots of green water. I think lots of light and lots of plants contribute. I leave the algae on the rocks and the back of the tank and the goldfish fry eat it. Too many people panic when things get a little green. I think it is a healthy sign that the water is habitable. I just clean enough to keep the algae from taking over and the water clear with its green tinge.

I'm also in Australia,

although in a colder area (Melbourne),

Yes, I've got lovely mossy green algae growing round the sides of all my tanks, my goldfish love munching on it, but I can't get free floating algae in the water of two of my tanks because they've got UV sterilizers.

I'm trying to get green water in my spawning tank (no UV), but at the moment (it's only been set up for about two months) I'm still battling with brown algae, it's starting to clear and nice green algae is starting to replace it, but only the type that is fixed to glass/plants, does anyone know what type of algae is the stuff that makes the water green? I know that sunlight promotes algae growth, I've got the tank right next to a window that gets full sun for about 6hrs per day, but is there anything that would promote this type of algae over other types?

Oh, I looked through the Rafflesgold website, and boy, those are hardcore breeders and keepers there! REally cool to look at so many high quality fish all in one spot! Thud.gif
Green water is excellent for raising goldfish - it makes it harder for predators to see them in a green pond, all kinds of foods are naturally available within the green water, and the color comes out so much brighter. My comet fry are all in green water (although not by choice, its just the Florida sun at this time of year), so are my husband's koi, and especially the koi have some excellent color going.
The comet fry grow like weeds, and every time I look they have added some size.... smile.gif

My two Fantails are in green water, but not through choice. It's seriously annoying me! I might have to invest in some live plants but will this be too much maintenance? Sorry to gatecrash the topic huh.gif

I have green algi growing on sides of tank and on natural rocks. Sue seems to love munching on it.

maniacholic, how did you create your green water? tell us about your setup and what pros and cons you notice about the water. Is you tank/pond/tub outside or inside?
