Hi all, We have a goldfish that my daughter won at a fair. We have got it an 8 gallon tank with a filter and light etc. Last week the water went cloudy, which we have now learnt is a bacterial bloom. So I have been changing 10% of water regularly and cleaning out the bottom of the tank and using a reccomended aquarium tonic salt for lethargic fish. The past few days he has not eaten anything and he is not interested in his food where as before he used to go mad for it. He has had a swollen belly and been trailing poo.... we read on the forum that this could be due to him being constipated and therefore we will tackle this by using peas etc. Please could someone advise us on the fact that his eyes are very slightly milky looking as if he has cataracts. Thanks very much.

Look closely at the scales. Are they raised up at all? Do the eyes bulge? If you have a test kit, test for ammonia and nitrate. You probably want to do bigger water changes each day, goldfish are very messy fish. You can bring a sample of water to a petstore and they'll be able to test it for you. Can any mods move this to the disease section?

I will move the thread,

If you can please answer all the questions you will see at the top of the page. This will give us a better indication of his environment.

We have had the water tested : pH ok, ammonia ok, nitrate high and have beenadvised more regular water changes, but due to adding fungus & finrot treatment to water, we haven't to change water for 7 days (as advised on bottle of finrot treatment) so it is a vicious circle!!! Thanks for everyone's advice, we will welcome any further comments and suggestions.
