I am converting my freshwater to a saltwater and giving my tropicals away. This mornig I noticed that one of the Barbs has a clear crystal on his back fin. Is this ick???? Can he be treated my his self or do I need to treat the whole tank?? my cat fish cant be treated with salt so what should I do wih them??? I want to be careful not to kill my bio. filter. I am going to use the gravel in filter media as a donor tank for the new owners tank!! Will this also be infected??

no, ick (or ich [Ichthyophthirius multifilis]) is a parasite that looks like this.

The clear fin could just be a color change or maybe another problem. I'll look into it. Good luck!

I think I mis-understood you. I thought you said 'clear crystal fin'.....sorry rolleyes.gif

It could very well be ich then, I would go to the pet store and get some treatment and follow the instructions. Minor cases usually clear up in a matter of a day or two.

Personally, I would watch the area for a day or two and see if the spot disappears. I notice tiny spots on fins occasionally, and they haven never amounted to anything.

If it is ick, I got this really good product at...Walmart! It's called ICK GUARD by Jungle, and it cleared up my fishies' case of the ick really quickly and well! rolleyes.gif
