I was just wondering the minimum size of a tank is for a betta? I found a large jar inmy friend's garage yesterday and thought I might be able to use it for a betta...I think it's about a gallon so. Would it be a bad thimg to keep him in there for a while 'till I can afford an actual tank?

I think half a gallon is the absolute minimum. What does the jar look like?

He'll need some plants for hiding places. I got a nice 2.5 gal aquarium set from Petsmart for $25 - comes with a filter, I added some plants, its really a nice setup. You can get 1 gallon sets like that too for like $16

Thanks..I don't think I'd go under a gallon. I've got a 2.5 gallon for my other betta right now and he's loving it. I've already started decorating my jar and punched many holes in the lid. It has rocks and I have a couple plants I can put in it.

Maybe you can roughly measure how much water the jar holds by using a well-cleaned 1 gal (or 1/2, 1/4 etc) to fill it with and estimate? Or get us the dimentions?

I have used large, one gallon pickle jars to temporarily house bettas. They worked great. I would make sure to put something over the top, so he doesn't jump out. A bit of netting held by an elastic or something like that smile.gif

an easy way to get the amount the jar holds is weigh it empty and weigh it full... subtract the weight of the enpty jar from the weight of the full jar!

a gallon (us) of water weights 8 lbs
