I have two little guys in my 12 gal with the feeder goldfish. Call this a 'hope it never happens, but just in case question', if the fish become ill from ich or whatnot, I know its not safe to treat scaleless fish with them, so I assume frogs come under that category too.

So what do you do? Do you treat them at all? Do loach and frogs for example get or carry ich? I've seen conflicting things on the net about this, and I've accidently killed two loach with Maracyn. I'd like to be prepared for the future, i've grown attached to the frogs and the cat LOVES 'em rolleyes.gif

Do you mean african CLAWED frogs or african DWARF frogs?

There is a HUGE difference.
African CLAWED frogs get WAY to big to be kept in a 12gallon. Especially 2. They need 10-15g PER frog.
Not to mention they grow much faster then goldfish and will eat any goldie that will fit in it's mouth. Not a good thing. They grow to 10 inches and live for 30yrs. Yes that's right 30yrs!!!
They are also very sensitive to vibration and current. They should not be kept with strong filters. They need plenty of places to hide and the water should be no deeper then 12 inches and kept at at least 70 degrees. They are also aggresive and may attack your fish as they get older.

African DWARF frogs are just fine in a 12g. smile.gif
No they cannot be medicated. You must remove the frogs or they will die. Just pop them into another container of at least a 2g capacity and keep a lid on them while you medicate. Once all the meds are removed with carbon, reacclimate the frogs and you are good to go!

If they are CLAWED you need another tank or they're gonna die anyway. Or your fish are.
A 20g long will do if you do A LOT of water changes. Good luck. smile.gif

Great. LOL now I'm going to have to do some research. Its an albino with what looks like claws. And since i dont trust ANYTHING my LFS says anymore...........

Its small tho. No bigger than the top section of my thumb, and hasnt seemed to have grown at all in the last few months. If I need to put them in something bigger, i can do that when the time comes, for now I think they're okay.

LOL when I can post pics, i'll take some and show their size in relation to the fish. The fish are probably 5 times their size at the moment. smile.gif

thank you!!!!

Hi - I am glad you are asking this question - it does sound like you have African clawed frods - whiich are (adorable) but highly incompatible with fish! The stores are pretty bad about makingf this distinction... but if they are African Clawed frogs (aka Albinos), they will need to be moved out soon if you want the GF to live! (or move the GF). Here's some good frog links to help you determine what kind of frog you have and what cosiderations have to be taken for their care:

http://www.allaboutfrogs.org/info/species/clawedordwarf.html

This site has everything you ever needed to know about forgs... and then some!

Let us know what you've got and post some pix! biggrin.gif

BTW - ADF (african dwarf frog) can do OK with GF until the GF get really big - then the frogs have a hard time competing for food - DEFINITELT remove all frogs before medicating for fish as the frogs absorb evrything in the water through their skin! It's great that you asking! My cat LOVES them, too - and even tries to lick the bloodworms! YUCK! tongue.gif

If they are albinos they are most likely clawed frogs.
I forgot to tell you. The easiest way to tell what you have is to look at the front feet.

African clawed frogs: 4 non-webbed fingers

African dwarf frogs: 5 webbed fingers(like a little hand). smile.gif

You've got lots of time to move them hon. Enjoy them they are really interesting animals.

Oh yeah - I forgot to add - Some say that the Albino or Clawed frogs can be kept with larger fish but personally, I would not risk it - that's just me. I would just read up before you decide. The Clawed frog is a very aggressive carnivore - in fact, I saw two of them chowing down on a sick (as in not yet dead) goldfish at the pet store the other day! yikes.gif If you love your goldie the way I love my goldie, that's not how you wnat to find out that he a little bit sick! Without clawed frogs, you might have a better chance of treating a sick goldfish. Just my twocents.gif !

wow..thanx for the lesson...never knew anything about frogs...just would see them in the tanks at lfs...had thought that they were tropical creatures.

Thanks Grahm and everyone. When they get a bit larger, I'll transfer them to a 20 I have downstairs that i've been keeping either for the fish or for the frogs. And hopefully for when I get a bigger house. A 2 bedroom condo gets crowded with 4 tanks, 2 cats and a dog smile.gif!
