Cycle Symptoms???
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just a little question! What are the symptoms of fish who are experiencing the amonia peak, then the nitrite peak? I take it there shouldn't be any symptoms when the nitrates take over? I've heard from kevkoi (thanks kev!) that when the nitrite is high fish tend to gasp because they are suffocating slightly. I think alot of us newbies would be interested to know what to look for, especially when tests have not yet been obtained for whatever reason!

Please let us know what to look for! Would be very helpful!

Hmmm..cloudy water is a sign of the tank cycling. As for the process it goes like this. For a few weeks the ammonia level will rise. Then the nitrites will rise and the ammonia will go to 0ppm or be gone very soon. The nitrates are the last part of the cycle and will always stick around. They should always be somewhere below 30ppm. So, a fully cycled tank has nitrates below 30ppm and nothing else should be present in the tank.

Thanks, I was aware -to some extent - of the cycle in some respects, but do the fish show different symptoms when there are different peaks???

You will notice them gasping for air. They will be inactive. They will not eat. Some may float around, not responding to anything. Some will die. This can happen with both spikes.

Mine get red streaks on the tail when the ammonia spikes.

Ouch, I hope mine don't die! They seem fine, and did get a few red streaks which appear to have gone now. They also gasp even though my air supply is good! Thanks you guys!

High nitrite can also cause the red streaks, like ammonia, because the blood vessels are dilating as a result of poisoning. If you see these streaks you need to do a water change right away or they can die.

If you tend to the cycle then red streaks shouldn't happen. If you keep whatching the water parameters then you can know when to do water changes etc...

EDIT: When I said 'if you tend to the cycle red streaks shouldn't happen' that was worded wrong. Ammonia affects all fish differently and some fish don't get red streaks. Others do. But, if you're doing constant water changes then the ammonia shouldn't get to the fish as much. Ya know?
