Marco
Hello every one~

i was just wondering if anyone knows much about Axolotls or the mexican walking fish...because they look cool and im thinking about buying one...
if anyone owns one, any important information would be a great HELP biggrin.gif

i just got some questions :
1. are they compatable with goldfish? or will they eat the GF?
2. are they freshwater fishs like goldfish? (so i can use the same water as goldfish...)
3. can they survive if i was holding or not under-water, or do they have to be under-water as like normal fishs?

ummm, if i missed anything then could you please add it in for meee smile.gif

for those who dont know what Axolotls are i've added a pic...
d_golem
i dunno much bout them, but i think they're salamanders suspended in larval mode, hence the visible gills, and i wouldn't put em 2gether with GFs cos i think they eat fish dry.gif
Marco
umm i dont really know anything aswell...but what do you mean by suspended in larval mode?
hmm not compatable with goldfish ehh? sad.gif oh well!

Someone on this board had a lot of axolotls, was it Blinky? Maybe a search on "axolotl" will give you something.
And check http://www.axolotl.org/index.htm.

I used to have these. These are 'baby' Salamanders. They will eat almost anything. I had a bad situation, where one had almost half of the other 'mudpuppy' (Was what I called them) in his entire mouth. Out of 3, 2 survived into becomming Salamanders. I fed them fortified crickets, and mealworms. Fun guys. I had these when I was much younger. I would definently not recommend them with Goldfish. Just my two cents. smile.gif

Alright... thanks for the reply's guys...

oo! yes, axies!! great little creatures.
well, they need bout 10gals each, cannot be kepy with goldies.
They like cold water aquariums with no lighting due to the fact that they are natural cave dwellers.
They can be fed on anything from tubifex to live wax worms. they also need to have some kinda de-chlorinator in there water, just to neutralise it. Stress coat etc can be used for this. smile.gif
they cant be kept in tanks with gravel due to the fact that they will eat it, and no river stones either, so barebottom and sand is your only option. They can be put in with slate and stuff though.
axies can be kept with plants, as they wont generally go out of their way to eat it, but if it gets in their mouths, then they will!! lol!!
its the same with your fingers really, they will snap at them if you pt them in the tank, but they have no teeth, so its just kinda funy!! scary the first time though!!
Axies CANNOT tolerate salt of any kind, and medications for them are pretty hard to find!!
they can handle methelene blu though. theres a list around here somewhere, ill get it up in a mo.
Axies dont need to be kept in a tank with a lid on, as they cant come out of water anyway. smile.gif there have been a few VERY rare cases of axies morphing into land creatures, but i dont think there is much need to worry about that biggrin.gif
axolotls should only be handled when necessary, such as when cleaning the tank.
They can be trapped with a shallow net and then gently grasped with one hand around their neck and shoulders and the other around their abdomen and hind legs. Do not squeeze them because they are easily damaged. They often thrash their tails around, which could damage them, so just watch out for that. smile.gif

here is that list of meds:

1. Myxazin (Waterlife)
2."The Complete Remedy" only contains sodium chlorite.
3. Mercurochrome (used on wounds).
4. Nitrofura-G (Aquatronics).
5. Maracyn (Mardel Labs) - contains the antibiotic erythromycin.
6. "Sulfa-bath" (Tetra).
7. Methylene blue - non-toxic in low dosages.
8. Furan-2 (Aquarium Pharmaceuticals) - good all around anti-bacterial medication - highly recommended.
9. Melafix (Aquarium Pharmaceuticals) - effective against external sores.
10. Panacur - at low dosage levels - effective against internal parasites, specifically roundworms.
11. Flagyl, also known as metronidazole - Used at a lower dosage than for reptiles, it appears to be safe for use as an anti-parasitic treatment in food (inject it into a waxworm or other food).
hope this helps.

Marco
aiiright thanks! Alice...thats really heaps cool of you to help smile.gif
just one thing,...when you said they need some kind of de-chlorinator for the water, can i just use the same treatment as for goldfish? and what about the aqaurium salt? cant i use that anymore?
umm i got a barebottom tank with river stones about 2-3inchs...you think anything wrong could happen if i had the river stones in?
if i put them in my tank..can they handle a filter and a air-pump?
and thats basically it...
i might be buying one of these lil guys in the future...so i just need to know what things are important to keep them smile.gif

tinkerbell
thats allright hun! its good to ask!!!
well, in answer to your first question, yes, you can use exactly the same stuff as you would use on your goldies, unless the product SPECIFICALLY said not too. as i said, regular stress coat will do. smile.gif
in answer to the salt - nope. they cant take even aquarium salt. they are like frogs in that respect!! if they get an injury you should just make sure the params are good, and i have heard of people applying hydrogen peroxide onto serious injurys, with good effects. smile.gif
hope this helps agin! dont hesitate to ask if you have any other q's!
your river stones sound fine yo me, there aint no way theyre gonna get one of those in their little mouths. i think you just need to be careful with smaller stones etc.
Axies do need a filter in with them, just as any other fish would, so ye, they will do fine with one.
As for the air-stone, i have no idea to be completely honest!! i cant see why it would be a problem though, unless you could see it was stressing them out. smile.gif
tinkerbell
just another thought - about the hydrogen peroxide - you can get this from your local pharmacy, and is very cheep! (bout 40p over here!)
tinkerbell
just to let you know, it turns out that axies can have air stones!!!

question:

can Axolotl's be kept with White Clouds or Danios ??
Tanya_woz_ere
no, they should only be kept with the same species. They will eat your fish.
tinkerbell
ditto
some people actually feed their axies on guppys and danios etc. so no is the answer!!
Marco
wow tanya! your Axolotl's look amazing!
tinkerbell
heres a few pics of a friend of mines axies.
