Hi everyone

I currently have a 55 gallon tank with a Whisper 60 Power Filter that I have removed the carbon from due to treating fish for Ich and Pop Eye. My question is this--I will be receiving in the mail in 2 days a Marineland Penguin 350B Power Filter to run with the Whisper--is their a carbon in this filter and should I remove it if there is ? The last dose of Maracide and Maracyn is Wednesday and I will not receive the filter until Thursday.
Thank You for any and all appreciated replies.

hey,

Well the great thing about these filters is that you can have multiple layers of diffrent filter media. So its optional. And if your still treating the tank you should remove the carbon.... But if your done treating, and the fish look good.I would do a 35% water change and add the carbon back into the filter to take the rest of the medications out...
Hope this helps, good luck

Thanks for replying Alex

No, My fish do not look like much has changed--but I plan on doing as you say, but I will wait two days while running both filters and then start a second round of different medicines--AND I did not know to do a 35% water change--Thanks.

If the Penquin 350B is configured at all like the Penguins of the past, they run with a cartridge that you purchase consisting of a black plastic frame with blue floss glued on it. There is carbon encased in this cartridge. IF you do not want the carbon, it is a very easy thing to cut a slice across the top of the blue floss and bang the carbon out into the garbage. The cartridge will work splendidly to filter out the large debris in the tank and all - exactly as it is designed to do. It just will not have any carbon.
For that matter, when you want to remove meds, it is easy to drop more carbon pieces down into the slit in the top of the fiter cartridge and it will work just like it did when new.
While you are medicating, though, remove all the carbon from the new cartridge.
I hope your fish respond to the next round of treatment!

Thanks for the detailed info. daryl

I moved "shorty" <--my calico with Pop Eye into a hospital tank today--they seem to be responding to the aquarium salt treatment for Ich and I bought some new carbon to put back in the Whisper filter so that in the end, only the salt will remain in their tank. I had NO LUCK with the Maracide or Maracyn, so hopefully these other treatments will work. And I also did a 40% water change on my 55 gallon tank--took FOREVER--LOL--
