I just came up with a new problem. i set up a temporary 30 gal. stoarge box to break in a new filter for my new tank. well when i set it up,teh air pump is really loud and vibrates like crazy. it is so loud, you can hear and feel it the ground below. my grandparents live there so i dont want to bother them with this pump. n elite brand. i cost me like 7 bucks. like i said, its just temporary. well basically, i need to find a new pump for my new tank which is around 70gal. does anyone ahve one that they would recommend? i need it to be as quiet as possible and without vibration if possible. thanks for any advice!

I am not sure if that is possible! It is sort of the nature of the beast - I just replaced my 7 buck airpump with a 30 buck Rena b/c it was supposed to be quieter - it is a little quieter but it is not quiet. It still vibrates but is better built on the bottom to keep it from rattling around (flexible rubber nubbins instead of solid rubber pads that slide). At least the more expensive model came with an air flow adjustor... that's something!

Does anyone have any advice for how to stifle air pump noise without compromising the action of the pump? (I tried a sock but I was afraid it would overheat and not get enough air circulation on the motor...) Permamnently adhering the unit to a much larger solid object - like a piece of wood would help but it is not very practical... What have you all done that worked?

EDIT: Look what I just found!

EDIT: btw, does anyone own a whisper air pump. the one shaped like a dome. according to the description, it is quiet and a large reduction in vibration. i hope it is cause i HAVE to reduce the vibration adn the sound.

the sock does work a little bit, if it's on the ground the sock will not make it vibrate on the grond that much
i also tried putting a pump in a box, it actually makes it quieter

I folded up a thick hand towel and set my air pump on top of it and it really cut down on the noise.

Mine is a small pump but it drives us all crazy..it vibrates on the kitchen bench like there is no tomorow.I got some suction cups from the supermarket (the ones you can stick on tiles for extra hook) remove the hooks and shove it them on the bottom of the pump so that you have "rubber feet" it really helps cut the vibration down.
