I might be getting a whisper filter instead of an aquaclear for my ten gallon. I'm planning on keeping 6 black neon tetras and three cories in there so I want some extra filtration, and I was recomended a 150 gph for an aquaclear. If I get a whisper, can anyone recomend a model with similar gph for me? Thanks smile.gif

A Whisper 20 does 105 GPH, a Whisper 30 does 145 and a Whisper 40 does 210

hope that helps

Thank you very much! If I keep the 30 underwater suctioncupped to the side, will it make enough aeration for the fish or should I invest in a bubble wand? I decided to go with the whisper instead of the aquaclear because my ten gallon doesn't have a hood, it came with one of those versatile ventilatedtops that are more suitable for a very small lizard or frog. I can't keep that top on with a filter, so I usually have it on, but I want to keep it covered when I get the new fish.

Hmm...Also, which whisper filter has the lowest gph? The 10i? I want to set one up on my three gallon kritter keeper for my betta smile.gif

Kissy, they have a small whisper 5-15 internal filter that would probably be good for your betta.

The 5-15 gallon Whisper does about 95 gph.

As for the in-tank filters:
the 10i does 90 gph,
the 20i does 125 gph,
and the 40i does 170gph.

I've got the 20i and it's pretty bulky. I suspect that the 10i would take up too much space in a 3 gallon kritter keeper. Also they're pretty loud, as the motor is in the water, and I think that the noise would be too much in a 3 gallon.

Hope this helps...

Oh didn't know that! I've got so many tanks in my room I'm trying to keep it quieter, and I don't want it to upset my betta! Hmmm still searching for a betta filter as well as a 10 gal filter that can suction to the side without being too noisey.

I don't know exactly what they are called, but Walmart has these little filters that you attach to an air pump. They have a little carbon cartridge that pops in and out of the holder. I bet that would be good for a 3 gal. critter keeper.

Kissy, sorry I didn't mean that the motor was a loud motor, it's actually quite quiet. However, since it is actually in the tank/and under the water the vibrations of it make it rather loud for the fish. That's why I said that it would probably be too noisy in a 3 gallon. You might be okay in the 10g though. I currently have a 20i running in my 20g, w/an aqua clear.

As for the little filters that Queenie mentioned Penn-Plax makes several different types. The Small World Pump and Filter Kit costs about $12 @ Wal-Mart. Of course you can by it w/o the pump, but the cost difference is only 2 or 3 dollars. I've used this one and the main problem is that there really isn't any resevoir area for the good bacteria, and everytime you change the filter cartridge you tank has a "bio-filter crisis." I've solved this by replacing the cartridge, but then placing the old/used one in the tank also. On the plus side the filter unit does not take up much space, even if you put the used cartridge back into the tank. I use this one (for the moment) in my 2 gallon betta tank.

The other decent one that Penn-Plax has is called the Clear Free-corner cartridge filter. It offers a much better surface area for good bacteria growth. Also the filter pad can be ripped/cut off of a used filter cartridge and placed in the filter for added bio-filter surfaces. It takes up more space than the other one, but it works better, and comes in two sizes. The Penn-Plax web site claims that it can filter "aquariums up to 20 Gallons," but I wouldn't bet on it. dry.gif I've used the clear-free filter with good success. If you decide to go with this type of air-pump driven filter this would be my choice.

Penn-Plax also has traditional corner filters, which would probably work well, but I've never used, and have no clue as to their size. You can see them on the same page as the clear-free filters.
