Hey... I just noticed a small hole in my fancy goldfish's tail. Its in the portion that just grew back after the Ich/fin rot episode.

Tank Info:
Ammonia: Unknown, still no test kit for that
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 0 ppm
pH: 7.2
pH of tap: 7.2 - 7.6
Tank size: 10 gal
Filtration: Top Fin 10 charcoal filter
Water Temp: 78 F
Water changes: 20% two times a week; most recent one was last night
Water conditioners: Stress coat & stress zyme
Fish: Just 1, about 4 inches
Food: Bio Gold goldfish wafers, 2 times a day; peas once a week
Unusual findings: Just the hole in his tail
Unusual behavior: None
Chloramines from tap: Unknown

Should I salt the tank? I have various medications for the fin rot and Ich left still as well as an antibiotic.

What should I do?

If it were me I would get a test for the ammonia asap. With a cycling tank you are going to need it quickly.
Next I would just use salt to see if it clears up. Often bad water can make a fish sick from just a split fin to half dead, so I would start by making sure of that first and then go conservative with salt and see, if by then it doesn't clear up I would use a fin rot med.

Good luck.

OK, I added the salt and some more of the stress zyme, that seemed to help him recover from the last bit of fin rot very quickly. I'm going to pick up the ammonia test kit during my lunch break today.

It's hard to tell really if its a hole or just the tail growing back unevenly. Since he never stopped moving last night, I couldn't tell. He only stops moving when he is pooping! So, I was able to get a good look at him after I fed him breakfast. Hard to tell, but his tail never really grew back in completely - what can I do for him to speed up the regrowth? His top fin (is that the dorsal fin?) grew back 10 times larger than before and it stands straight up, whereas it used to flop over - now he looks like he has a mohawk.

Thanks for your help!

You are welcome. The best thing to do is water quality. Keeping it as clean as possible is the best thing you can do.

Well, I used the ammonia test kit on my aquarium water - it was about 2 ppm, but my tap water has about .5 ppm of ammonia!!

I grabbed something called Ammonia Clear Tank Buddies - is that safe to use?
Devs
Okay, that ammonia reading is high.Which means more water changes until you can get that level down. As for the Ammonia Clear Tank Buddies-never used it myself,so I can't tell you how it works. The best tip I can give you is to try and stay clear of the "Quick Cure Remedies".There's nothing better for your fish than training yourself to try & get into the habit of keeping those water changes consistant.I think too many people try & use chemicals & such,to add to their tank for a Quick-fix. Water changes are the easiest & safest "Sure-bet"!! wink.gif

I am doing a 20% change now... but is the level in the tap water too high?
LaurieP
As Devs said water changes are going to be the best. I though used those tank buddies in the begining when I had an emergency. It took twice as long to get the cycle going.

Once you get your cycle established and use a good water conditioner you shouldn't have a problem with the tap water. But it will be a problem until then. Keep a really close eye on the levels.

What are the others?
littleone78
The others look OK
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 0 ppm
pH: 7.2
Water temp: 75

OK, so I will step up the water changes until I get it to a good level. What water conditioner do you recommend?

I also bought a larger filter, but haven't put it in yet... will that help with the ammonia too?
