Are there any plants for aquariums that flower under water?? (i mean pretty flowers not tiny tiny green ones). I heard some people mention lilies, but aren't they just for ponds? and how would you see the flower in an aquarium?

Most flowering plants aren't meant to be used under water, but there are a few that will do. Yes, lilies are mostly used in ponds, but there are lily bulbs out there from miniature lilies that are made for an aquarium. I have heard that Walmart carries them with a few bulbs in a bag. I have some of them in my tropicals tank, but I got mine from Koko, so I don't know where else to get them.
The flowers on them aren't the only pretty thing - the leaves come in different colors as well. Some of mine are light green, very dark green, and purple - looks really cool.
Some aquarium plants have flowers too, but they will grow out of the water and bloom there. I think my madagascar plant did that, or was it the anacharis? Can't remember right now....

Im in the UK, so do you know the latin name of the miniture lilies so i can look for somewhere that sells them here?

Thanks
Ranchugirl
No, unfortunately, I don't know the latin name. But I found a website who sells those bulbs, and they mention a latin name.

THe picture shows the purple version, but there are also green leafed ones around. I believe the main group is called Nymphaea lily bulbs....unsure.gif

smile.gif I have those lily bulbs in a few of my tanks,Most are doing well. They actually have a guarantee on the back if they don't grow, but somehow I always forget about it. rolleyes.gif Not too long ago,I got Cabomba off a Lady that I buy from that was flowering. To the Goldies though,it was like Broccolli florets! :roflThey had those poor little flowers eaten, before I even got all the plants into the tank! Most plants do not flower under standard aquarium lights ,and without CO2. I'm not saying that it;s impossible,it's just harder to do. smile.gif

The ruffled sword will actually produce white flowers, they will be alittle above the water, but none the less...it has very sweet smelling white flowers. Its a long stem like protrusion from the base that will extend to the top of the tank and then move horizontally. From there you will see runners starting to form. the little buds will flower and from there you will gain new ruffled swords. I am currently awaiting mines blooming time. It might not however since i moved it to a new tank recently sad.gif

Some photos ive found of the ruffled sword flowers:

However, if you are looking to just add color, you might want to see if you can find a plant called Telanthera alternanthera reineckii which is a midground plant and tends to like alot of light, it will grow in less lighting, but the colors might not be as bright. it has narrow leaves that are a nice green, but on the underside a nice redish/pink hue. Mine seems to be happy, and my goldies dont bother it.
A photo i found:

I also picked up a plant called a Cardinal Plant Lobelia cardinalis which has a huntergreen topped leaf with a rich purple underside and it sits very low, so it would have to be a foreground plant. I havent had it very long, so I can if you want, keep you updated on it and i cant seem to find any information on it that matches what it looks like, so it might be named wrong smile.gif

Please feel free to email me if you wanna talk plants smile.gif
