UV Sterilizer

My new 100 gal tank is cycled!!! Perfect water parameters and brown algea growing all over
I heard that UV sterilizers use alot of electricity. I live in California and our electricity is expensive, especially in the summer with ACs running.
I heard that you don't have to run your UV sterilizer 24/7. Does anyone know about this??? If so.... how long should you run a UV sterilizer in one day for it to be effective????
Anyone know???? I'd appreciate advice....

I'm not going to be any help answering that, but I just wanted to know a couple of things....if you don't mind me pestering you of course.
You said you have one. How much did it cost you? Where did you get it? Was it hard to set up?

I got it from GoldFishConnection.com....
I can't remember the exact price... I remember it was the most expensive item I purchased there (over $250.00) ... click on the link and go to supplies... there you will see the prices and a pic of the UV Sterilizer.

I got a combination package, UV sterilizer and AquaGold Filter. It came with all the parts and was easy to put together and install.
I believe with the other places that sell UV sterilizers you have to go buy tubing or pvc pipe and put it all together. That was to complicated for me. Thats why I got it at GF Connection.... I didn't have to do much at all. It came with all the parts I needed

It is better for you to turn on your UV 24/7 because turning on an off frequetly will shorter the life of your UV bulb.
Since you have 25W, and let assume that you run it 24/7. Electricity cost is in term of kWh, and the typical number is $0.06437/kWh. So for one year, it will cost you
0.025 * 24 * 365 * 0.06437 = 13.9 ($/year)
Therefore, it probably cost you $2 to $3 per month. IMO, it is not too bad .

aaaaah THANKS!!!
I was thinking it used alot of electricity like a small electric floor heater. I used one of those heaters, winter before last, when my central heat was broken and it raised my electric bill by $150.00 in one month.
I certainly don't mind a few dollars.
I guess I heard wrong that UV sterilizers eat up the electricity. Thanks for your advice.
I am not good with mechanical things and technical stuff. I just love my goldies!!! That's all I know.....
