Hi, yesterday my fish had one of his fron fins torn off in a fight im guessing. I thinke he formong fungus around the wound. The left side of him is so torn up. Plaese help, anybody, I am open to any suggestions.
Chishower
You need to move him into his own tank, with perfect water and start salting to .3%. You take one teaspoon of salt per gallon, disolve it in tank water, a add it. Repeat 12 hours later, and then 12 hours later again and you are at .3%.

I do belive mardel makes a good fungus medecine...let me go check my stuff.

Maroxy should help. Its an antifungal medicine by Mardel.
Lozbug
Melafix is a good healer for torn fins & fungus. heres a link to medications page.

good luck smile.gif

Clean water and salt should do the trick, actully, one can keep fish healthy with nothing but clean water and salt (And PH adjusters if you have very low or very high PH....)
sollicitus_witness
My mom does not understand. She thinks it is a waste of water to fill up my hospital tank for "one little fish". He looks like he is in pain, and with the condition he is in, would I be able to use a bowl for a the last resort, or should I freeze him?
Drgong
Just tell your mom that you have to medicate this one fish, and you don't want to medicate the other fish.....(even if the medication is salt...)
sollicitus_witness
I did! She said, " My word Chris! Wouldn't be easier to just flush him down and buy a new one instead of wastng your time on just one little fish" As you can probably tell, my mom is not big on fish. : dry.gif She also points out tha fact that salt would be more expensive than fish. I think her mind is set on no. sad.gif
Lozbug
salt isn't that exsepnsive, or try some melafix. You don't need to put him in a tank by himslef if you can't. I treated my tank with melafix & salt as Jackson was ill, Atta was fine still.

please please do not flush or freeze the fish, these are the worst ways to kill a fish sad.gif
sollicitus_witness
Thank you! I wanted to hear that so bad! heartpump.gif . I was terrified to kill my fish! Thank you! I'll go and buy salt today!
Lozbug
as long as the dosage is low, no more than 0.3% i think, i'll check it out, it's on here somewhere. It will be fine as i said i salted my tank when Jackson was ill and Atta and my 2 hillstream loaches were all ok - still with me now smile.gif

EDIT: here is the salt link Salt Treatment
Tamianth
Hi Sw,
As long as the wound is not around the head, gills and eye's. You can use a cotton swab or piece of cotton and swab the wound with either peroxide, iodine or Betadine. Only once! Do not get in eye's,gills or mouth. Give the iodine or betadine a min to dry. biggrin.gif
sollicitus_witness
Okay, so keep it low. He seems in and out of it, I better go get some. How long did it take for Jackson to heal?
Lozbug
i was using salt for different illness, and that was about a week?
sollicitus_witness
So the Iodine and brentatine thing, how often would I do that for him, or is it only once, should i do that with salt?
sollicitus_witness
I have Hydrogen Peroxide, is that okay?
Lozbug
hopefully Kathy will see this and answer, i have not done that treatment before.
Chishower
I'm kinda curious. How big is your tank? And how many fish?

Peroxide is fine as long as you swab it on with a q-tip. If you just drip it on it will run and wont be able to get through the slime coat. I would say only once, because you have to hold him slightly out of the water and it can be rather stressful.

And my mom was the same exact way. When my 4 inch oranda started picking on my pleco, she told me to just flush the oranda. ignore.gif

I have a 29gallon. And I have 4 fish in there, I have 3 babies(2 fantails and a moor) and a medium fantail. I know it is a little crowded, I had a bubble eye, but he died 2 days ago because of fungus around his gills. I bought 3 when I first started my aquarium like 2 months ago, but when my birthday came on the 16 my sisters bought me 2 more since i loved my fish so much. I was guessing that the moor and the Bubble got in a fight? Or do you think the overcrowding of my fish is hurting him? Water quality is fine, changed water yesterday, and all my others are playing very well, too. huh.gif
Lozbug
it is a littel over crowded, you could do with another 15 to 25 gals ideally.(should allow 10 to 20 gals per fish, in ideal world) if you can't thou, just keep on top of water changes about every 5 to 7 days should be okay. and as long as your water quality stay in params you should be ok.

Bubbles can be delicate, one could have been a bully fish - i had one of them.
sollicitus_witness
Ya poor guy, I dabbed some Peroxide on Minogue, so it is just a matter of waiting, what about his fin though? What about his left side, will the fin grow back?
Lozbug
i really don't know, i haven't done that treatment, i'll pm Chishower & Tamianth see if they know. smile.gif
Whirlwind
The fin should from back after some time-I've had a torn fin with one of my fish but he's fine now.You just have to wait and make sure the tank conditions are good.
SO,good luck!
sollicitus_witness
Thanks! All of your work was really appreciated! I will let you know how he is tomorrow! biggrin.gif
Lozbug
Hope he's ok *fins crossed* smile.gif
sollicitus_witness
I jst have to feep a *very* close eye on him, he can't swim now because of the damage taken, so he is stuck at the bottom, he is trying so hard to get up with the others. I really hope he cures up, I have to leave him for a day on the 4th. Fins crossed and knock on wood! biggrin.gif
Chishower
He *should* get better. If the whole fin is gone I don't know if it will grow back, I have never delt with that. If he can't swim, can you hand feed him?
sollicitus_witness
yeah.gif You know, I should try that! I have never been in a situation to do so, I guess I will figure out the answer to that tomorrow during crunch time. Thanks, I totally spaced that thought out, otherwise he would never get a bite down there with all of my hungary hippos.

Chris
Tamianth
Hi SW,
Yes, either peroxide, or Iodine, or Betadine and only once (1). And his side & fin. Use only one of those. Just be very careful not to get any in eye's, mouth or the gill. The fin will grow back. Takes time for them to heal. Also, along his side, once you have done the peroxide (or iodine, or betadine), you could apply some neo sporin (antibiotic salve) making sure you go the same direction as the scales. It won't stick too overly long, but its generally enough and long enough to help. biggrin.gif Clean water, salt , tlc and time will do the healing! biggrin.gif
sollicitus_witness
sad.gif He is very weak..... He is floating around like a dead fish and even hovering the top. He is alive though, I was reading the salt dosage page, and I am still not sure on how much to treat him with the other fishes in it, by the way i am using the salt method.
sollicitus_witness
Help! MY fish Is stuck in the filter, omg he is really weak. How do I help him out! Should I turn it off?
sollicitus_witness
Okay, so I got him out of the filter, he is hovering over the top or the tank, but still breathing, I put 2tbs of salt in so that would be .2% I think. I have him in my net beacuse I dont want him drafted into the filter again while I,m typing.\\
Ammonia and Nitrite is 0
Nitrate is 20
Power filter for 20-40
I feed themWardley flakes
No additives just the salt
behavior listed above
I will get PH asap, dont have the test for that
29gal;4fish running 2 mts
Change every week, 50/50
A Bubble eye but he died(additions)
I am finding a bad case of fin rot and what I believe to be fungus
Lozbug
oh dear, so tank has been salted, does he have blood straks at all? in the tail? i am worried this could be septicimia. .... ??
sollicitus_witness
Well, he died. You know, I noticed my black moor was all black 3 days ago, with a hint of gold on his belly, when I look at him now he had quite a bit of gold and silver. He died with too many questions unanswered, when I saw him this morning, alive, but just floating aroung motionlessly, I should have put him to sleep. I want to go to Petco, and have them test my water, my sister says I'm dumb. He didn't have a slime coat, I really thought things would have gotten better. I just want to say thank you Chishower, Tamianth, lozbug, and Whirlwind for all of your support.
sollicitus_witness
What tail, his tail was virtually gone by the morning, what is septicimia? Should I worry about this with my other fish?
Lozbug
oh i am so so sorry, it is just awful. I lost a goldie to septicima, in december, my other fish didnt seem to be effected, i would do a big water change, and test the water again. what type of test kit do you have? is it strip or liquid?

I'll dig out some info on septicimia, it will explain better than i can.

00001649.gif
sollicitus_witness
My test kit is strip, I'll make sure to change the water.
Lozbug
Septicemia
Symptoms: Redness on fish, bloodstreaks on skin without apparent injury, especially blood streaks in the fins, inflamed blood vessels in the skin and at fin bases stand out, small haemorrhages around eyes, loss of appetite, sluggish or very sluggish behavior

Septicemia can come as a result of another infection or illness (such as finrot) or it can result instead from dirty water.

When the bacteria enter the goldfish's circulatory system, they are able to travel throughout the fish's body very quickly, causing damage to body tissue, blood vessel, and the fish's heart. This often results in internal bleeding. Because these fluids may fill the fish's abdomen, dropsy may also result. This is a very serious condition and must be treated immediately.

c/o petlibrary.

if it was septicemia, then it attacks so quick, often by the time we notice, it can be too late.

Your blackmoor is probably just changing colour, it is natural, as long as he still looks healthy, should be ok.

Take Care heartpump.gif

EDIT: liquid tests are more reliable, if you take water to petco ask them to write down what the results are, as they may just say yeh it is fine.
sollicitus_witness
He was the one who died. Oh thanks for the advise on the watere strip. I am sure it was septicemia was it, alot of the signs add up ill.gif . Thank you. heartpump.gif

Chris

Sorry again, it is an awful illness, i have been there to, i also couldn't bring myself to put my fish down.

Take Care, heartpump.gif
sandy
hi there SW, it sounds like you have bacterial finrot in your tank. Sorry you have lost a fish to it and you need to medicate the whole tank with something like maracyn or maracyn2.

You need to do lots of small water changes with gravel vacs to keep the bacteria count down as this isnt shown up in test kits. You could have perfect water but you cant test for the bacteria. I dont know your tank routine but i think doing 30% twice a week or even more should hopefully bring the bacteria down and feeding your fish good quality food should lift the immune system of your fish.

Chishower
I'm so sorry you lost your little fishy, but you tried your best. heartpump.gif

He was lucky to have such a devoted owner.
