Wow Kathy, they are all gorgeous, I can't really pick a favourite although I'm partial to your Yamabukis. Their colouration is quite different from goldfish, not the same yellow/gold, very intriguing. The kin shiro bekko seems to be a good size and your water is sparkling clear too. Frankly, now I'm just totally envious.

You've obviously got all the fancy lingo and variations down pat as well. I think that is an achievement in itself. smile.gif I think I'm right in saying kin shiro means black on white background? Bekko must be another finer point of difference. I really should learn about koi types as a project of interest. Who knows, one day I might get lucky. wink.gif
Scott
Those sushui's are so awesome, still wink.gif I love them. I wish I had room for a butterfly like that.

the shiro bekko butterly is beautiful as well.

Your fish are amazing.I love the yellow ones. heartpump.gif

I was so inspired by your pics I went out to feed the fish at the koi farm this afternoon.

biggrin.gif TY All!

Fish,
Your right on the Bekko. Shiro Utsuri is the opposite, but the easy way to tell the difference I found is in the fins (dorsal & pecs). Bekko's black (sumi) on fins is generally striped while a Utsuri has solid black called motoguru (sp?) .

I still have some problems with some of the fish placements, still learning. Do think I have most of the colors.

The pics don't do Carmel justice at all. He/she (suspect male) is really translucent and very carmel with white, there's actually dark carmel spots on the edge of its tail. The finer points are excellent finnage on this one. The two ginkinrins are more of a butterscotch yellow.

All are japanese bloodlines, so there colors should hold well.

Scott,
Bectie is my pride and joy, my first butterfly koi. I bought her from a friend who had to move back east. I had a few of the baby's also as well as two males, all SF's, and the neighbors sprayed there yard. sad.gif of all the fish I lost, most where the baby's,plus the two males. In the pics you can see the only two surviving baby's. Wild one is the larger, and Rocky you really have to look for, ghost fish. So the yamabukis where replacement fish, two being def. males, one female. Not sure how the poisoning could have effected Bectie at this time, I'm still hopeing she will spawn this year. The two youngsters did pull through though and even grew this winter, I was afraid it may have stunted them, but doesn't look to be the case now. I'm pouring the Dainichi growth food to them this year. So far I'm impressed with it, they all seem to be adding weight and some size. biggrin.gif

I remember that story of the neighbours spraying. How heartbreaking for you. Did you go ballastic at them? I probably would of even though I guess there was no malice involved.
Scott
oh, so you have one of those considerate type neighbors too huh? My neighbor likes to spray when the wind is blowing, toward my pond! My pond is only two feet from the chain link fense that seperates his property from mine. It drives me insane.

The bekko is beautiful, I lost my bekko last year. She was my first koi I had her a little over 7 years. She was 2 feet long, a little shy but with a little coaxing would eat out of my hand. Last year was a bad year. I did learn a lot though, but it still can't replace the fish I lost.

Thanks for sharing her picture she reminds me a lot of my bekko, except your has the long fins mine was standard.

Yup, the hubby had a chat with the husband. Not sure they got the point. Can't trust them at all.
However, I'm prepared this year, hehe! Lab to test the water, Dept of agriculture, DEQ and what nots. My QT is up and running out of the way for quick transferal.

Might want to talk with the dept of (Idaho) Agriculture Scott, they just love people who spray with the wind blowing considering it say's on labels not to..... *laughs* A nice fine from them is in the thousands... really takes a bite out of the ol checkbook. rofl3.gif The koivet lab, University of Georgia can test for posions independatly and by filing a complaint with the dept of Agriculture, it proptects your rights to sue for damages as well. According to my lawyer, the fines from those guy's hurt more then personal damages suits though. We had a gal in florida who got a mega dose of poison in her goldie pond, turned out the poison used was illegal, only available to a licensed buisness, used illegaly as a outside spray and by the time it was all said and done, three agency's nailed them, each carrying fines in the thousands. The worst part of it was, the man who got it, was a lawyer, who in turn gave it to his daughter to use. Oh, the stuff also killed a neighbors Parrot.... _bad_ stuff!

Oregon,Washington & California I know its against the law to use certain chems within 20 yards of a creek or river, I have both in my favor. The chems used are crossbow & roundup mixed. The crossbow is the deadlier of the two. Its bad news as it continues to dissapate into the air and travel on the wind for day's or weeks, until it rains into the ground. Weed & feed is on that same list.

Its sort of a case you need to know whats used, run a databse check on it, Etoxnet & PAN databases both.

Have you talked to the guy Scott? Find out what it is he is useing...... go from there!

Fishmerised
Woe, heavy stuff. Sounds like you know your poisons, and the best way to get revenge. (evil laugh)

Scott, sorry to hear you lost your fav fish too. sad.gif
Scott
WOW, great info. He wouldn't tell me what he was using, he just said it wouldn't hurt the fish. It was bug killer because he sprays his three weeping birch every year for birch beatles, which is obviously a waste of time because this year the trees are half dead. Plus he sprays for bugs around the perimeter of his house.

What I don't understand is he refuses to at least tell me that he is spraying, if he would I could put tarps over the pond until he is finished no big deal. If I spray, which I do sometimes for aphids on my peach tree, he thinks that he has the right to know about it. It's unreal! I don't mind telling my nieghbors that I am spraying, they can come and help or do it for me I don't care. But isn't it fair to return the favor, especially since I honestly have a reason to want to know what is going on and he really doesn't except for the fact that he's a jerk.

It's unreal, I haven't figure out why people have to be like this guy? I don't make noise, I don't have parties, I don't bother him or his wife at all. For some reason he hates my fish.

Scott

He sounds like a jerk. I would do as Kathy suggested and report him to the relevant authorities for spraying on a windy day. Write a letter and explain all the difficulties you are having with him.
Tamianth
Yup, sounds like a right royal wiener, ignore.gif errrrrrrr, winner! rofl3.gif

Hows the fencing? Is it time to upgrade to say a 8 or 10 ft fence? What about a blocking wall/fence on that end of the pond? A nice half moon gazebo .... Oh, the possbility's are endless to foil! I don't think weeping birch are tree's that get too overly big height wise.

Personally Scott, I wouldn't tell him diddly squat as of now, none of his buisness, invasion of privacy etc........ dry.gif

Yeah, I know what you mean though Scott, some people think they own there property and yours also...

Last summer when we went to yellowstone I remember seeing someone's home along the freeway with a small heard of elk, so he could have it worse ya know....
Could have been cows, pigs or peacocks! rofl3.gif The former being very smelly, the later being extremely noisy!

I can honestly only think of two reasons some one wouldn't be honest and forthcoming over the pesticed, either its a illegal one, or he's afraid everyone will want to know his cure all tree killer, lol!

Might ask about whats used for those certain pests he's supposedly spraying for. Another thing, the dept of agriculture will find out, they can test and tell whats being used.

*******
Fish,
I learned to use the database in self defense, but it helps me as others gain from my hard learned lesson. Don't know what the chem was in Darlene's case, but I can tell you it was very horrid stuff. Poisoning goes like this: Outright death's, survivors go through the normal, parasite outbreak, then secondary's ulcers and fungus (sap). But the poison used in Darlene's case caused the wens on her Oranda's to collapse, just like melting fat...... sad.gif I think it effected there organ's badly.
It was very sickening and heartbreaking to see this!
Fishmerised
Poor Darlene, I would have been screaming blue blxxdy murder, I would have insisted he come and see the results of his handiwork. He probably would have come over too, these types are usually stickybeaks. Phew, I'm lucky our neighbours are reasonable, if you discount the one who threatened to jump the fence and beat me up and then to kill my dog (all while hubby wasn't home, gosh he was really brave, eh?) and the other one who shot my cat with an airgun.

Our neighbourhood has it's rough elements but most people are really nice.
Tamianth
Grrrr! Fish, thats when you pick up a crowbar and take the stance! mad.gif

rofl3.gif I'm a crusty little bird with a irish temper to boot.

But yeah, your right, nothing brave there! I have very little patience for those kind of guy's. My hubby would have had a cow over that. In fact he did. My son had to have this kid sit on his lap coming home from basketball practice and little creep kept pinching him and then when they got to the house, he took off with his bag and books. So Randy tripped him and got his bag back. The grandfather came to the house making threats, but I'd already had a phone call from the parent who brought them home telling me what happened considering he'd seen it all.

Didn't invite him inside, so when he walked in and started mouthing off, he found he couldn't get out the door and past me, knowing my hubby was due home any minute. I proceeded to show him just how fast I could move (scared my son too) told the old geezer if he laid a finger on him he'd have to deal with me and I was standing behind him by then and he hadn't seen me move. Finally escorted him out the door giving him heck. The old guy avoids us like the plague ever since, lol! I guess he thought he was going to intimidate me as well, but found it didn't work that way! My husband was furiouse when he got home.

No probs with the others though. biggrin.gif

Those crusty old men. mad.gif

That reminds me of another story. A bit off topic but anyway.

Twenty odd years ago in my first car which just happened to have a 250 hemi under the hood I did a stupid thing and tried to overtake a car on a very steep incline. The reason I did this is probably a situation most people have experienced. As one approaches a steep hill one starts to build up hp to climb it, I was powering along nicely, within the speed limit, when a crusty old man and his better half pulled out of a side street and plodded along at about 15mph. I had to slow right down and I waited and waited but he didn't increase his speed by much. I was annoyed and pulled out to overtake him. Well, of course, this wouldn't do would it? The nasty so and so decided to put his foot down and by the time I had overtaken him I had reached the top of the hill, but didn't realise it.

It was a T intersection with a busy road and I just flew straight across it through a cyclone wire fence into the potted pines of Flower Power Nursery. My car was a right off but myself and 2 passengers were shaken but not hurt.

As I sat quietly amongst the ferns sipping coffee and pondering just how lucky I was, the old codger and his better half came inside enquiring after me. The assistant directed them to me, I was so shocked I didn't realise it was him until afterwards. I watched them approach and just assumed they'd seen the accident and were enquiring after our wellbeing.

Well, he walks up to me and says in an authoritarian, self-righteous manner, "Do you realise you could have killed someone?"

I was just stunned, after a moment I replied in a scathing voice, "Well, what do you think? What's it got to do with you anyway?"

He looked totally abashed, as if nobody had ever spoken back to him in his life before. He left without saying anything else, as soon as he was gone I realised it was the old codger in the car. Probably had to check if we were still alive out of a guilty concience.

He did two things wrong that contributed to my accident. One he pulled out in front of me and caused me to brake, two by not allowing me to overtake him he deliberately forced me to drive on the wrong side of the road while approaching a crest. Ok, it was my fault I didn't see the T intersection but if wasn't such an antagonist driver I would have seen it.

He was lucky I didn't recognise him or he would have got a tongue lashing he'd never forget.
Tamianth
rofl3.gif Would have ripped him myself. See that kind of thing on this hwy a lot and its just not a fun hwy to do stupid things on around here. That was a nice car. Drove a 65 GTO with a 6 pk on it long ago..... biggrin.gif

My herbicide neighbors are up this weekend, so have to do quick check ins, dry.gif what a pain! Been up since 6 am, we are watching round the clock, camera ready.

If they spray I've got to move my fish asap. I did a scrape and scope on my newbies, who came up squeeky clean happily! biggrin.gif So everything is go with the QT if I should need to move my pond babies.

Good luck Kathy. I guess they're gonna spray sooner or later so it's probably better if they do it while you're all prepared. Keep us posted. smile.gif
Jaxom_Ruatha
WOW, Tamianth! I am so jealous, I don't have a pond big enough for koi (Not that I'd be likely to find any nearly as gorgeous as yours. But I took a few picture of someone else's koi while I was in Hawaii (On Oahu) these past few weeks and one looked just like your Kin Shiro Bekko, so I'll post them here and then if you want to see more I'll be posting them in the Goldfish Photos forum.

Hope you enjoyed, this was the most beautiful koi I had ever seen! It had amazingly long, flowing fins and really long barbels that looked like a long white mustache.
Tamianth
Thanks Jax! Beautiful Kin Shiro Bekko Butterfly! Looks like its a younger fish. The rest are Standard fins, Orengi Ogon, Orengi Matsuba, Ki Matsuba, Hi Utsuri's and Purachina Ogon. I want to add a Hi Utsuri Butterfly to my pond !

I just saw a pic last night of a Ki (yellow) Shushui... OMG! What a lovely fish! A really true Lemon yellow and the barring so very black down the back. What got me was the perfect tancho type markings of bars on the head, like a sunburst! Very unique IMHO! biggrin.gif

Love seeing the unique ones like that!

Fish...
OMG! They actually have been useing a *gasp* weed eater...... But then again, I have been present outside working in my yard too! LOL! We did see them pack in some can's and what looked to be a spray can, so will still keep our eye's on em.

I've seen all blue, all orange, but that was the first Ki I had seen. Amazing on the yellow, and its so deffenitly true yellow. I alway's have a problem with some of the colors, like Utsuri's, either call em red or yellow and a lot are really more Orange then either. dry.gif
