Nah, these guys are canas... and their mother is Chewy the monster snail. They can potentially get to be baseball size full grown.

They are beautiful! How do you guys get your snails to hang out like that? Mine always closes up and tells me to go away.

My brigs won't hang out....from what I've experienced, canas and insulariums aren't as shy. They're just wondering if there's food out there!

I have a brig. That make me feel better. I have been handling him a lot. My goldfish is making him even jumpier. She just started a snail torture thing. She loves to scare both of my snails. I think it's because the brig will fight back for her food.

Yep, brigs are sissys when it comes to showing their faces. My snails are just with snails in the tank too, so they're not really afraid of anything. My brigs will come out, but it takes forever. If ya accidentally breathe on em, they snap back in their shells. Big wimps I tell ya.

I love seeing the chewy babies.
akk, my brigs are like that too. I have noticed that since they are in a tank of their own, they don't close up when another snail touches them like they did with the fish. But I have never had one open while I was holding it.

awwww!!! everyone on here with chewy babies should post pix and we could have a big family album!!!!
the canas are definately more outgoing then the brigs, the only brig Ive had that would willingly come out of his shell was Gumby, he came out just like the canas do!

I wish I could have a little chewy. I came so close to asking for one, but then I got a 29 gallon instead of 25 so I think three goldies would be better. Does anyone plan on breeding canas in about 7 years when I get out of college and can buy an even bigger tank?

LOL, I'm sure Heather, Devs, and myself will still have lingering snails!!!

Darn, now I want a snail!
Can you put them in with tropicals? Just wondering... And when I say tropicals I mean neon tetras and danios, so like 76F temp water?
smack536
Jun 24 2005, 06:42 PM
yup...although higher temp = shorter lifespan its up to you, the snals are adaptable

Jun 24 2005, 08:44 PM
You would probably need to figure out something aobut the pH and the hardness. Most tetras like that like soft, acidic water, and I think snails like hard, basic water.(I'm not sure about danio requirements..I think danios might work out better tho) My black neons are in a very high pH and are doing fine tho (I CAN"T lower it lol) as long as it is stable. I'm not sure about the acidity tho, maybe someone else can help you out there.

I can help you out as far as the snails go, but my knowlege dont extend into tropicals
Ponderosa Power
Jun 25 2005, 01:18 PM
I know about as much about snails as tropicals...which isn't too much really lol. I've just got some black neons and I researched them a ton

My snails live with a Danio. They have lived with three longfinned/leopard Danios and they have fine. *shrug* I didn't really research the Danios before I got them (as usual, I jumped right in) but they are fine together.

I thought I would add a couple new pics of my chewy babies to the roster!
This is a veiw from above

you can see that the one in my hand has had a few mishaps by the ridges in his shell. Hes all good though!
They definitely got big and they're still growing! Albeit, a little slower nowadays....

It's so cool to see my little pink eggs all grown up! I wanted to get a map of the US and put pins in all the cities that have Chewy babes! Everywhere from Washington state to Florida and lots of places in between!
I still have a few decent ones left! (even more with shell damage if anyone's like me and likes the misfit pets...)
It's been too hot to ship lately (Della, I didn't forget about you, just waiting for the weather to break!!) but it has to cool down soon.

She layed a couple clutches when she first came home, but I got rid of them. I allready know that there's not enough room for 300 more!

She's living the good life--nice clean water/lots of veggies, not a care in the world. Her shell is even starting to look better.

Nope,I have retired Miss Chewy from the life of spawning.
