My female betta has dropsy and i dont know what to do she seemed healthy up until about 2 days ago then all of a sudden her scales were out like a pinecone.

Here is the info you want, Ammonia level is 0ppm, Nitrate level is 0ppm
PH out of tap is about 6.0, I dont have a filtration system she is in a betta tank.
I use the BETTA BUDDIES tablets to treat the water when i do a water change,
I treat her for parasites a week or 2 ago. I feed her HBH Betta Bites, She stays at the bottom now that she is all bloated but before she didnt behave oddly at all. Now she has trouble eating. I dont know the nitrite level, PH is about 7.0, the tank is a 2 gallon tank and i have had it for about 1 year now. I change the water once a week and about 25% with the betta tank atleast. 1 fish is in the tank and she is a small betta about 1 1/2in.
No new fish. Besides the Dropsy she also has little black spots on her body. (she is light coloured so they show really well) I dont know the chloramines levels.

What should i do i need to know before it is to late, if it isnt to late already!!

I don't think there's a way...
Do you feed them floating food which they suck in air and it expands?
And i didn't even know bettas can have dropsy
Code4Fish
I know that this is not a site for bettas but the treatment is the same for bettas and Goldies, i have 6 Godlfish aswell and i have learned over the years that the treatments are alot alike, but i have never had a goldfish with dropsy so i dont know what to do

Just read it up. smile.gif
Heat the tank to about 75 or 80f
Feed medicated food.

And try salt

Sorry to hear about your betta. I am going to move your thread to the tropicals Emer section. There are people who know more about tropical fish that scan that area.

I am sorry to say I know how to treat gf with dropsy but not sure if it is ok for the bettas. I would assume yes, but the salt. Some bettas don't do well with salt.

If the treatment is the same for betas as goldfish, GoldRyeU is right on the ball. Remember to check the other beta too for signs and to put the ill beta in the hospital talk. And check the water quality. Usually from water quality or viral or bacterial.

Apologies, i mean "hospital tank" not "hospital talk" oops.gif

I would try Maracyn 2. Bettas tolerate this medication well.

Also, I would up your water changes. Without a filter, I would recommend 100% water changes once per week.

I leave a big watering can full of water sit out for at least 24 hours so that the ph stabilizes and the temperatures matches. Then I add Prime (a water conditioner) and the water is ready to use.

I catch my betta in the little cup that he came in, and then I wash out the tank in hot water and river rocks in hot water. I also rinse off his little silk plant.

Then I put it all back together again and add my prepared water smile.gif

How is your betta today?

She is not doing well I am treating her with PRIMAFIX but i think that she is past the point of saving...this makes me really sad but I dont know what else to do so... cry3.gif

What to do?
touchofsky
I don't think the pimafix will do much for dropsy. I would try to get the Maracyn 2 if at all possible.

Sorry to hear she is not doing well sad.gif

sad.gif Sorry to hear about your Betta.I'm with touchofsky on this one though.I think that your Betta might improve more with a combination of Maracyn, and Maracyn II.I would at least give it a try. Dropsy is very hard to deal with,so the quicker you can start the treatment, the more chance you have for the little guy to make it.Good luck. *finger's crossed*

Okay so I have really sad news...I got the Maracyn 2 but it was to late, when i got home this morning she was dead!!!

This is so sad, thank you all for your help but it was to little to late

Sorry that you lost your betta sad.gif

Just keep the Maracyn 2 in your fish supply cupboard. It is good to have on hand.
tinkerbell
aw. im so sorry you lost your betta. are you going to get another one? 00001649.gif
Code4Fish
I am not sure that i will get another one or not, I have only lost 2 fish thus far and both of them have been bettas, I know that they are not all that hardy but it is still sad but i am sure that i will get another one sooner or later cuz i like them alot.. heartpump.gif

First i gotta get my 7 other fishes moved to my new house without any of them dying exactly.gif

sad.gif Carolina,Sorry to hear that your Betta didn't make it. Dropsy is a terrible syptom that usually shows up when it's almost too late to treat. Definately hold on to the Maracyn II.That is one of the top meds to keep on hand for emergency's. Hope you feel better-losses are so hard to handle.
