After a week of struggling, Montgomery died at about 3pm. I was monitoring him all day, and knew that the last time I'd see him, he would be gone.
I now wish that I euthanized him, because he was suffering. He was a tough fighter, and a part of me thought he'd pull through.
Although he was about three years old, I still know he didn't die of old age. I don't think I want to own another fish until I'm able to afford to keep them ideally. I mean, until I'm able to purchase water testers and the electricity to run both the filter and the heater.
Montgomery was the best fish I ever had. He had a great, great personality. He was so sporty and energetic. He was very attentive to everyone in the room, and if he was moping out near the tank floor, as soon as someone came near, he'd rush over to the person, wiggle like mad and give them a flare. So funny! He was fun to play with, he liked to chase fingers.
He was my first betta, and I feel that I was spoiled for life, I doubt I'll find another betta just as amazing as my Montgomery.

I'm so sorry you lost Montgomery.

For 3 years he had the best life with you, so that means alot! It sounds like he was very cute and full of personality. I know it is hard to lose them. We become so attached! But someday I hope you feel better enough to give another beautiful betta the same great life.

I agree with Graham. Three years is a pretty good life for a betta and you must have been doing things right to have him for so long. He would certainly give you full marks for your care and I'm sure that any little betta at the fish store would love to come home with you
That being said, I am so sorry that you lost Montgomery. He sounds like a fish with so much personality and zest. I know you will miss him and take care
