Hi there. Im sorry If my question is already asked but I couldnt find anythin like this.

I really want to get some guppies.

What tank size do they need?

What equipment do they need?
How much filtration? is 5x enough?
How many water changes do they need?
Are they easy fish?

What else should I know about keeping guppies? smile.gif

hi k

guppies arent as easy as people seem to think as they are so inbred its left most of them weak, but with the proper care they will live up to 3 or 4 years, especially the females and males usually not as long.. they require a lot of swimming space, high ph and some salt in the water.
the ratio is 1 male to at least 3 females if you want to breed them. some people just keep males and others just females.
the tank for half a dozen guppies should be at least a 10 gallon, more if you can get it. how many were you thinking of?
tonic salt is useful as it contains the minerals that guppies need which arent found in freshwater set ups. add 1 level teaspoon per gallon.
the filtration you are thinking of is ok for them.
doing water changes of around 20% each week should be enough.
hope some of that helped. i have 3 females in a 55 gallon and they love the space.

i think easy and uneasy fish, as many people deemed it to be, is from experience. if you have fry you should do a prepared 5-10% water change daily to keep the water clean, guppies are dirty critters. one thing you should know is that, when the female is preparing to give birth, free floating and other aquatic plants are a must. if not, have a few ornaments that the fry can hide/camaflouge in.
