i soak my food like it says on this site, then a fish starts showing symtoms of SBD. I feed my fish wardley goldfish pellets.i soak the pellets about 10 minutes.pls help.
jimmy_396_jimmy
Also i was reading and then i found this word, fasting, what does it mean by fasting your fish?
maniacholic
I don't ever need to soak my food laugh.gif cause most of the food I buy has low ash contents krazy.gif , wardle probly has ash contents of 11% and up, I suggest you "fast" them (fasting means not feeding them) for 3 days then feed them nothing but vegies or high fiber food for three days then you'll have a goldy with an intestinal track as good as new biggrin.gif
jimmy_396_jimmy
ummmm 3 days seem a lot.... think the fish would be okay?and what kind of veggies? and what is "ash"?
maniacholic
If you look up the nutritional analysis you would see "ash",
here's a rundown of "ash" basicly in an ideal food you need high protein, low fiber, a little bit of fat, and low ash http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/...showtopic=30919

BTW: a goldfish can last all winter without food so three days isn't alot
jimmy_396_jimmy
i'm thinking of feed them bananas.....think this is a good idea?also how much if i do feed them...?
jimmy_396_jimmy
scratch that.....i have no more bananas........ sad.gif but i have rice!!

I have an impression that my advice was ignore cry3.gif , there's a section in there about fruits and vegetables "fiber"
jimmy_396_jimmy
it wasn't ignored....i don't get what you were explaining and stuff
jimmy_396_jimmy
you were talking about "spirulina"......i got another fish food that has that. do you think it's good for goldfish. the label says "spirulina added", max. ash 12%, min. crude protein 25%, min.crude fat 5%, Max. crude fiber 2% ( also it says it is a fish food that is extruded- it softens from the outside to the inside that it will be fully digestable

whut question hun? Why your goldfish are showing signs of SBD when you soak your pellets? Since i am not sure of the question, ill answer that one smile.gif

SBD can be caused by many things, swallowing air bubbles, high nitrates, constipation, egg-impaction, eating dry foods and injesting air that way (which isnt your case) internal bacterial or parasites, ect ect. The point being, the food might not be the culprit. Heck, fancy goldfish can just get SBD because of their bodies being shaped the way they are. The only thing to do would be to post in the desease section and see if some one can narrow it down there.

Heres where i think you got confused - The whole ash buisness. I think maniacholic was only referencing the fact of the high ash to say he doesnt have to soak the food, dont even worry about all that, your food is ok. And as i have shown you, SBD can be caused by alot of stuff.

Hope ive helped. Good Luck - Meg

ETA - found another Question, food with high ash content isnt nessasarily BAD. I use wardleys all the time. Pellets and Flakes. High ash doesnt make it bad. It is of lower quality yes, but not bad. Kinda like the difference between regular mustard and gourmet dijon. (for lack of a better anology)

the best things is to keep the diet varied, and once a week not feed them, while they act hungry all the time, GF do quite well not being fed on a daily basis, in fact, one person I know has had a GF for 4 years, and feeds her GF one time a week, and just uses 1/2 of a saltine cracker cumbled up and put on the tank.
