The instructions on the can of fish food says, give enough that it takes several minutes for fish to consume. What does that mean? My fish devour what I give them in maybe at the most 2 minutes. In relation to a tsp. what would be considered a normal portion to give a black more, or fantail two inches in lenght? Is half a teaspoon too much, and is a quarter of a teaspoon too little?

use the good ol trial and error technique, BTW if you're new to goldfishes please read the caretips located on the main page.

I ususally just go with a 'pinch' probably somewhere equivalent to .25 teaspoons per goldie. a 2 inch fish will do fine with that, if hes a ravenous eater. shy eaters would do fine with a bit less.

You will soon learn that with goldies, 'all that can be consumed in a few minutes' would be most of the can!
They are voracious eaters. I only feed a chunk of food (i have gel food) that is about a teaspoon in size to my 4 fish, as a meal (this concurs with Smacks .25 of a tsp). They get small 'treats' such as a few peas, or a peice of fruit twice the day, as well as having a chunk of cucumber or similair in the veggie clip to snack on as they please.

I only feed a pinch, twice a day, and the pinch only takes them a minute or two to mow down on. After a while, you will start to see how much they eat, in a certain amount of time. Most goldie foods to say to feed the goldfish enough that it takes them 5 minutes to eat, sometimes they even say 10, but I wouldnt go by that. I would give it 2 minutes.

i feed my goldies some pellets most of the time, takes them like 1-2mins to eat but then they will go on a hunt for more food along the gravel......................................

as a example, I feed my five goldies (and 5 white clouds) in my 55 this one a daily basis
1/2 teaspoon of flakes, 1/4 of a teaspoon of grnadules.
when they get treats they usally get a pinch of bloodworms or something...

I like to give them a little extra wheen feeding pellets, so that later they can find some along the bottom. But I make sure to put them in places so they need to actually look for them, not just eat them.
