Hello-

I have a request for you all over here that own both Marisas and Spixis (I own neither.. so I have to ask you.)

I can't post a link but Terri (from Rainbow Snails) and Donya believe that her (Terri's) Spixis may have crossed with her Marisas. To view this post, go to applesnail.net, the "Apple snail species" section and look for the "Marisa/spixi crossbreed" post. I hope Terri doesn't mind me posting a link to her photo album:

http://photobucket.com/albums/v113/terribr...e%20crossbreed/

The only ones in the tank were Marisas and Spixis. Apparently it's always male Spixis that mate with the female Marisas, but Donya would like more people to isolate a couple and see if this is in fact a crossbreed or a Spixi mutant. The ones she has now (about 3 or 4) have two snouts and six tentacles, which sounds like a mutant, except they have characteristics of both species.

So, if you have Spixis and Marisas, would anybody mind helping out in this fascinating project by isolating one of each species? I'd do a male Spixi and a female Marisa.. would anybody consider trying it?

Personally I find this absolutely fascinating and I would definitely do it if I had both species. Is anyone interested?

Airwen (aka the snail geek).

Yeah, I read that post a week or two ago, and I was enthralled. How cool. I'm getting rid of my adult rams, but once the babies grow out I'd do it. I dunno how to tell the rams sexes apart though.
Raith
yeah, terri said she crossed it. and it does look like... two of each but same snail. really weird. youre better off asking there, though. or devs could answer it for you.

Thier both. How else would they self fertilise the eggs?

I thought rams had seperate sexes? I thought trumpets were the hermaphrodites. blink.gif

smile.gif Sometimes the name brings a little confusion. Marisa Cornaurietis, also known as "Giant Ramshorn/Columbian Ram,is in the Apple Snail Family. Each snail is either a male or a female not both. Eurropean Ramshorn(red or Brown) that are very common, are actually from the Planorbid Family. They can be both sexes. The term Ramshorn is used for any snail that has a flat, but curled shell. wink.gif Actually,if you go to Applesnail.net,and look up Marisa's,they will mention the fact that they are closely related to the Asolene Spixi's,so I guess then it wouldn't be so surprising if they did mate. Right now I only have the Spixi's,but as luck would have it(or not rolleyes.gif ) Angjo happens to be sending me a goody box with a couple Marissa's in it,so I may try to hook the two up! yeah.gif laugh.gif

God, I have my adult marisas on aquabid.com right now... they're just too "active" for me, and I've heard from Angjo that they'll actually eat spixi eggs so I wanted rid of em. I have a bazillion babies though. rolleyes.gif
