Tomorrow we're going to start digging where the pond is going to go... Only thing I was alittle curious about is how deep should a normal pond be???

if you plan on keeping koi, or letting the fish stay in over the cold season, i would think about 3 foot / 1 meter. smile.gif

mine is approx 1 meter deep, as i will let the fish stay out over winter - good luck digging, smile.gif

If you plan on keeping Koi I would say 4 feet if you live in an area that gets very cold in the winter. I have a friend who lives in Renton, WA and her pond rarely freezes over and I think hers is about 3 feet.

Thanks everyone! I was thinking myself alittle over 3 feet, but wasnt sure what was best. It rarely ever freezes here as well, so 3 feet should do good.

Wish me luck... its gonna be alot of digging! Starting tomorrow evening, and working on it all weekend. What fun!

Yes, 3 feet is okay but for koi 4 feet is much better. Also, when digging your pond make sure you also take into consideration possible predators. If you have shallow areas racoons will destroy your pond and kill your fish. Stray cats will also catch your fish, if you have shallow water. The walls of koi ponds are generally straight down. This will keep the racoons and cats away from your fish.

BTW, good luck! Post pics of 'pond in progress' so we can see how things are going!

Don't forget to get a net above all. There's winged predators more deadly then the neighbors cat is. Osprey & Heron. Otters can also do much damage as well as mink. Recently saw a post and reminded those can make the pond tour for a snack also! dry.gif
