Hi there!

I was wondering, just for future reference, could a betta live with an african dwarf frog, or would it be a bad idea? I thought someday when I can afford it, I would like to get a small tank with a light and everything for my betta, and I just love those little frogs. I can't buy one for my current tank because it has spots in the hood it could escape sad.gif

Just curious smile.gif

Also, I am curious, how many female bettas would be best to keep in one tank? I read somewhere if you have only 2, the dominant one will "peck" at the other. Doubt I could ever get another decent sized tank, but thought I'd ask for future reference, just in case smile.gif

Thanks!

I've heard that some bettas can be kept with an African dwarf frog, but it depends on the temperment of the betta (some will attack anything else nearby, others don't seem to even notice). However, if you do have them in the same tank, you need to make sure the frog gets enough food. Bettas tend to be piggies when it comes to food, and most adfs have poor vision and find their food slowly, at best. Some people will feed their frog using a baster or some other device to place or hold the food directly in front of the frog. Also, be sure to factor in the frog's water volume requirements separately in addition to the betta.

For female bettas, the smallest tank I would recommend would be 10 gallons, then you can keep 5-6 female bettas. I have had the best success keeping females in groups of five or more.

It seems that when they are in a larger group, they form a pecking order and no one betta gets picked on.

My females all get along great and they never pick at each other. They really make a pretty tank with all of the different colours smile.gif

Thanks for the info!! I'm writing it down so I remember smile.gif

Wow, 5 or 6 females? Would they be added to the tank all at once or slowly over a few days/weeks?

Actually, in the case of female bettas, it is best to add them all at once. If you add them separately or slowly, then the pecking order has to be established all over again. When you add them in a group, all at once, it takes about 3 days for the pecking order to be established. If you then add a new fish, that throws everything all off, and they have to settle the pecking order again.

So, the best thing is to have a cycled tank ready for them. An easy way to do that is to run the filter you are planning to use on the new 10 gallon on an established, healthy tank for several weeks to get it seeded with good bacteria. Then move it to your new tank. Another way is to use some filter material from a healthy tank.

You still have to watch your water parameters for the first while, but I have had good success doing it this way biggrin.gif

Thanks smile.gif LoL I've read it's a good idea to only had 3 fish at a time or something, so I wasn't sure about that. I probably will never be able to afford another tank, but I thought I'd ask for future reference, just in case smile.gif

My current 10 gallon tank is home to my guppy family right now biggrin.gif LoL The only other "tank" I have is a bowl for my male betta *sigh* I can always dream though smile.gif

Thanks again!

Thanks... I was interested in getting some female bettas and came across this. Would you say that I could keep 5 female bettas and 3 tetras together or no? (Maybe the tetras would relieve some pecking pressure, lol) I like the idea of keeping more than 1 betta per tank and with 5 or more you get so much color choices!! The LFS doesnt' sell bettas but walmart (ugh, I know) has female for $2 each and I wanted to see how they would do. biggrin.gif

WOw, $2 each? Wal-Mart here has them marked for $5 each, like the males I think o.0 Spendy! It'd cost over half of what another 10 gallon tank would cost just to buy 5 female bettas o.0

Good luck with yours! I've only kept male bettas and only one at a time, so I can't help with your question sad.gif

Right now I have two tanks of female bettas, one is a 10 gallon and there are 7 females in it (I have good filtration and keep up my water changes). They have lived together for 18 months now in the 10 gallon tank, with absolutely no aggression problems.

The other tank is a 20 gallon tank. In that tank I have 4 female bettas (all I could get at the time that I bought them), 6 white clouds and 6 zebra danios. Every one gets along great and the female bettas show absolutely no interest in the white clouds or danios (and vice versa).

I would think you could put some peaceful tetras in with your females without problems. What type of tetra were you thinking of?

I allready have 1 glowlight and 2 neons. Would 4 female bettas work, or would I just be safest getting 5? I figure, I can either get 5 female bettas for approx. $15 or 3 more tetras for $15.... I like bettas more than tetras though.

My mom doesn't want to get more than 1 or 2 more fish mad.gif . How about putting 1 female betta in with my tetras?? smile.gif

Yes, a single betta should do just fine with your tetras. Don't get two female bettas, though, since they may squabble.

Ok, I was thinking I would try 1 female since my other bettas (males) always chased my tetras and ate their fins. I would like to try a female (which I hear are less aggressive towards tankmates) in my mini-community tank.

I haven't put my females in with tetras, but they have been with white clouds, zebra danios and corydoras catfish and have never showed any interest in any of them, so it would be worth a try smile.gif .

Two female bettas will fight w/ each other if in the same tank so you need to get one or five+. I think four females would be fine together.
