Hi all,

I have 2 Anglefish. A zebra striped one named "jailbait" and a pure black one. However I ALWAYS thought the black one was female. Weird

Anyway seems like there are hundreds of eggs covering one of my stones in the tank. Didn't really notice them until today when I saw the Zebra chasing off all sorts of fish (which isn't normal). And the Zebra was hanging around the rock which it never does.

Well the eggs .... some are pure white and others are kinda clear? Does this mean they are fertilized or not? I'm not sure what to do next.
Here's a picture for your viewing pleasure

the white ones are unfertilized and the angels will pick off the unfertilized eggs and fan the good ones.
usually the first few lays are lost because the angels need to learn to look after them properly. dont worry about losing the first few batches as its very common. if you want them to have a chance of raising their young then you should transfer them to another tank on their own.
if they do manage to get some fry then you will need to get some food for the babies. the eggs hatch in around 3 days i think and are free swimming a few days later. they should be ready to eat at the free swimming stage.
someone else with angels should be able to help as well. if you look at the breeding tubes the female is short and round and the male is long and tapered. sometimes two females will pair up.
love the pic, angels are one of my fave fish heartpump.gif

smile.gif Barb, love the Angels! I also have some of these fish & adore their personalities. Sandy has pretty much hit the nail on care. I had eggs once, but the Pleco ate them! yikes.gif Although I must tell you that the last two days, they've gotten rather Nippy & have that "egg laying look again." laugh.gif

sad.gif Sorry about the eggs barbra.

Thanks

Welp, the eggs are all gone. They had all turned white and next morning must have made a good breakfast for someone. It's so sad considering how dedicated that zebra angel was to look after them. *sigh*. Maybe next time eh?

sandy
she could be ready again in a fortnight biggrin.gif

haha. So I should get used to this then....

if you have a plec then the eggs wont get very far and will be eaten. the only way around that would be to have a small light so the angels are still able to guard the eggs at night, but nothing will stop a determined plec.
if you want to see them raise the young then a seperate tank will be needed or the plec has to be moved. smile.gif

I don't have a pleco in that tank thank goodness. I do have a cory cat but it never goes anywhere other than the gravel at the bottom of the tank. My Angels hang out around this large rock.... there are bubbles that come up through it.

In that case they should one day get it right smile.gif

hey. pretty much what sandy said is right, however they may not feed for the aslong as the first week, as the parents also produce a slime coat in which the fry can feed, its also possible that its two females, next time they have spawne have a look at their vents, see if they look the same or different, if they look different then you should be ok, and it is common for them to lose as many as four lots of eggs before they get it right smile.gif

congrats and good luck....
