How many gallons do cana snails need each? I want to get a couple apple snails or a cana for a new tank I will get soon. I know canas destroy live plants, but is this their only downside? I don't cound their size as a downside..I'd LOVE to show off a huge snail to all my friends. I think their cute biggrin.gif
Ponderosa Power
I forgot to add, I'd be keeping it/them in a 25 gallon tank with two fancy goldfish. Will the goldfish hurt the snail(s) or vice versa?
akk0415
I have heard 2 gallons each.
Esareh
I heard 2.5 so you can have 2 goldies and 2 canas. Cool!

smile.gif I love Cana's! .Yeah, they'll eat your plants for sure,so if you plan on doing a fancy planted tank-they'd definately not be the correct choice. rolleyes.gif laugh.gif They get to be a "nice size",and are very amusing to watch. If you're going with two goldies,I'd stick with one Cana.Cana's rate right there for dirtiness when it comes to "Poo". laugh.gif

I believe they also eat fake silk plants.
Ponderosa Power
are you serious???? Wow that is wierd! Has this ever happened to anyone? I was planning on silk plants o_O
smack536
I think its happened to errrika and devs, i think i remember hearing them say they seen nibbles out of their silk plants!!
Ponderosa Power
X_X

Is it like just a curious nibble or do they do damage? Please let it be the first one lol. Well...what natural-looking decorations can I put in a cana/goldfish tank if it doesn't work out?
airwen
Maybe the Canas thought they were real plants? I know next to nothing about silk plants, but if they were originally an organic substance, maybe they're slightly edible. I know you can't put string in the tank cause the snails will eat it. *shrug*

I doubt it's that common though, I wouldn't plan on it.

I think you should get some rocks and wood in there. I don't have Canas but that's what I have and it's worked out great and I see no reason as to why hungry Canas might eat rocks. smile.gif
smack536
i think it was just a curious nibble!! i really cant imagine a cana downing a whole silk plant!! (sometimes i can, sadly, tho! )
Ponderosa Power
Lol! That would be so funny to imagine biggrin.gif I'm sure canas don't eat rocks, I think that's gotta go somewhere with instinct. Maybe algea and other goodies off of the rocks tho wink.gif
smack536
i swear, mine have radar, when ever i drop in algae wafers, they just stop whatever they were doing, and march over, they pick em right out!! they know whats edible and not, thjey just try everything!!
Ponderosa Power
Okay smile.gif Thats definately reassuring. I don't want my tank to look like a barren wasteland!!!

biggrin.gif In general, they will try the Silk plants out-they'll try anything once. I think the plants will work fine though. If you keep the Snails happily fed with Veggies & such, they usually leave everything else alone(for a little while anyway) laugh.gif As for the wood,if you do decide to use it-keep an eye on your PH.A proper PH for Snails is at least 7.2 or higher.7.5 is a near perfect hit.The driftwood will lower thePH somewhat. I think a better way to go with thatis the "fake" wood that they sell if you like that look. Also be careful with the types of rocks that you use for the same type reasons. wink.gif

The vinegar test will help to figure out it it will mess with pH right? If it sizzles its a no-no? I have a rock solid kH over 300 and a pH of about 8. I don't think I'll have too much trouble smile.gif It is extremely hard to keep the pH lower for my tetras...it keeps coming back up! The don't seem stressed at all, so I don't stress about it too much. I just try to keep it stable.

The thing is,it's all about stable number's. Your fish came to your local fish stores,so chances are that their ph is something near yours. Alot of fish can adjust/adapt to different levels of Ph-as long as it's done gradually. If your Tetra's seem to be fine-then ,so be it-I always remember an old saying......"If it ain't broke, don't fix it". wink.gif You're doing good keeping it at the consistent level.

Could I put a Cana and a brig in the extra five gallons of a 25 gallon? I saw a pic of some brigs that were creamy colored with beautiful brown stripes, and now I'm in love! Is it a good idea or would it be pushing it? How long do brigs and canas live? Thanks smile.gif
Devs
biggrin.gif Putting a CAna & a Brig in the tank with your two goldies soundes perfectly fine to me.Just make sure that there's good filtration for everyone! wink.gif
Ponderosa Power
Yay! biggrin.gif Whats are the differences between a spixi and a brig? I want a snail with those brown stripes, but I'm confused on which one it is, and I'd just like to know the difference smile.gif
smack536

Ooh gorgeous colors! Perfect shells! Lovely! And as usual I heartpump.gif those Spixis.

What are the two orangey fish?
Devs
biggrin.gif Those are two of my three Baby Albino Bristlenose's,although they are getting bigger every day! laugh.gif I have two females and one male that's growing his big whiskers. yeah.gif
smack536
haha kind of off topic, but heather said once that a cana will eat right through a tree if they could...made me laugh when I re-read this...i can just imagine one of em gnawing its way through your driftwood!! yikes.gif rofl2.gif
airwen
Aww they're so cool looking! I have an albino Cory like you have in your picture - is yours fat? Mine always ate my snails' food before I moved him so his tummy is really big now. Ok wow, those fish are awesome.

Canas probably would. I've never had a Cana *tear* but I've heard A LOT that they eat voraciously.

I love snails. They're so weird.
Ponderosa Power
aww those spixis are so pretty!!! Are there any other differences between them and brigs besides color and pattern?
