Full Version: Swahala Wood

Not sure whether to put this in Equipment or Plants, but Plants seemed more logical. Decided to pick up some driftwood for my goldie tank due to an incoming L255. They had some real "tree wood" looking pieces and then a couple smaller, more "rivery wood" pieces. I just got a 2 lb. archish looking branch by the maker Feller Stone (Real Rock Carved Stone) the wood is labeled as Swahala. It's in a bucket soaking to release some of the tanins and I'll boil it in a day or two. I'm just wondering if anyone uses this brand or species of wood and how it went for them in tank set ups?

I personally don't use any driftwood in tanks, but I have seen wonderful displays done with it. After all the tanins are out, the only thing I would watch out for is a shift in pH towards the lower end - some driftwoods lower pH.

Other than that, sounds like a great addition. Here is what I found about the Swahala driftwood....
"SWAHALA DRIFTWOOD Africa is a continent teeming with the darkest jungles and the largest deserts. And like the continent, Swahala is a tale of extremes—a dark, bitter side and a light, garish side. The side exposed to the elements loses its protoplasm, eventually darkening to a rich ebony. The unexposed side builds a resistance to decay-producing organisms and maintains its bright wood color. Swahala wood embodies Africa and will add contrast to any tank. "

With the two-toned natural coloration in it, it must look stunning. Even more so than I saw on pictures online.... heartpump.gif

Thank you Ranchu girl! Funny thing, did you go0gle the wood by chance, because I did and found (I think) the same page! laugh.gif Sorry to be a bother, I really should research before bugging everyone here for simple answers. It does contrast and bring the tank together, there will be pictures in the photo section for sure if you'd like to see.

Yep, did the go0gle thing! laugh.gif And not to worry - because of "simple" questions people find out all kinds of things. I for one never heard of that kind of driftwood, but I sure like the way it looks. So, I actually learned something today! smile.gif
I'll go and find the picture section now!
