So here's the deal. I have one ten gallon tank with no top or lighting. No goldfish, but I have two black neon tetras. What I want to do is buy a top/lighting for the ten gallon and turn it into a tropiacal's tank so I can house the tetras seperately from goldfish and they can have some friends. But the filter I have hangs over the back and creates a waterfall, and this definately prevents me from finding a fitting top. Are there any that will work? I haven't found any after searching for a very long time. I think I might end up buying this:Top/lighting/filter that will fit my tank

But it is so expensive. WHY is this cheaper? I might end up buying this and saving the extra filter for something:Twelve gallon kit

So thats the tropical dillema. Now onto the goldfish dillema.

I also need another goldfish tank. I REALLY want to get a 20 gallon tank that can house two goldfish. This is so expensive tho, and I may have to settle for one in a ten gall. Does anyone know of a way to get an inexpensive ten or twenty gallon tank with the works? Money is definately an issue. I have a rubbermaid that I do not know the gallonage to, but I'm not sure if it will work. I want to get a top for protection and lighting. My ten gall that my goldie was in before is perched on top of a stable bookshelf. I do have cats ._. Plus, I like the glass ones because I want to see all of my fishie. I am looking mostly for a good quality kit, like the second link for a twenty gallon. Money is definately an issue, and if I have two tanks I will need to buy a stand that will hold both of them too. Please help!

well a HOB glass lids and a hood should fit on easily. the glass lids wont go all the way to the back of the tank on the filter side, but will stop any splashes getting on the light.

What i have on the 10gallon tropical tank is 2 lids (that were not made for the tank). 1 is smaller and fits in front of the filter, the other is bigger and fits across the rest of the tank.. its hard to describe, so thats why i have pics biggrin.gif I have my light sitting on top of the glass tops. If i wanted a hood, all i would have to do would be trim the large peice of glass down, because it goes way outside the edges of the tank.

You are soooo handy, there svendenhowser!

YOu can drive really fast to my house. The neighbor is tossing a 75 gallon tank and all the components out. It is only 2 years old. It is set out for the garbage man. (they are moving )

I would keep checking in the classifieds. Do you have university housing near you? As kids move out and go home, many will toss or sell their tanks for nearly nothing at this time of year.

Tops to 10 galon tanks are expensive unless you buy them as a set. I have never figured this out. Unfortunately, most sets come with the incandensant lights and not the flourecent ones you want. YOu probably would do best simply buying a 20H tank with the hood included. During sales, you can find one for about the same price as you would spend on the 10 and a flourecent hood.\

I have found that the metal shelving stand pieces sold by Container Store and the ilk hold over 350 pounds per shelf. You can custom build a shelf/stand that will hold both tanks, one above the other, or side by side, if you wish. They are not inexpensive, but also are not outrageously expensive - kinda middle of the road. They are also easily taken apart or put together in a number of configurations, so they move well, and can be used for just about anything in the future, if they were ever not needed for fish.

Good luck. That sounds like a good plan.

I don't live near university housing, but my mom does work at asu. I suppose that means nothing tho cuz she hates fish and wouldn't go out of her way in the fishie direction lol. I'll keep an eye on the classifieds then smile.gif

What filter do you have?

Not the test filter. I think its tetrafin (for ten gallons). It doesn't say how many gallons it filters per hour.
