My Fish have no idea what flakes are and totally ignore them. I can't get pellets or things like that. Can someone tell me how to interest them in it?
LaurieP
Hello and welcome to the site.
If you could give us a little more detail would help us.

Are your fish new?
How long have you had them?
What have you been feeding them?
What type of gf are they?

Often it takes patience to switch them from one to another.
Flakes should always be soaked so they sink and not float on top of the water.

Thanks. Yes, they are new. And i have to admit they are from a fair a few days ago. I've been feeding them aquarian goldfish flake food. I think they are both comets but one is black and they are v.small. I'll try soaking them but there are quite a few flakes resting on the bottom.

Hi and Welcome to the best goldfish site out there!! welcometo.jpg
you could also try feeding them some peas..there is a great section on here on gel food recipes......keep us posted...... gudluksn.gif
The black one could be a black moor? maybe you could post some pics to so we could help ya out...what size tank are they currently in? Laurie is so right on with the soaking the food thing.....I finally started doing that and it works much better!!

Probably not a black moor, but it looks quite small. I'll try and get a photo. It looks quite tube shaped and is an pale-greying black. Not really any distinguishing features. Any idea from that. The tank seems plenty big enough but i'll check the size....

Just had a thought, since he came from a fair a nd Iam unsure of his background. Could it be sun deprivation thats changed his colour, if so will he be orange again ?

What does his tail look like? Is it single or double?

Not all goldfish are orange so that could just be its natural color.

Hi & Welcome to Kokos wav.gif

Your comets need atleast 15-20 gallons of water first because goldfish are really messy fish...

A blackmoor is a fish with all black colouration + 1 pair of big bulgy eyes with double tail...

A comet have a long slender body + a very long tail, your comets are pretty young & that's why they have this black/grey colour on them...

Hi, young goldfish can change colour often. Your black fish may eventually go orange, or silver or stay black.

It sounds like your fish are too young to recognise flakes as food, they may have been fed fry food prior to you getting them. This is tiny specks of food, baby food for goldfish.

They will probably eat flakes soon when they are hungry enough but at the moment they aren't used to food they have to suck and suck, they are used to soft food. You could boil up some veges, like potato, pumpkin and peas then mash or blend it until it is very soft. Try feeding very small amounts of this stuff and see if they eat it.

Thanks I'll definitely try mashing the food. I think it may be just a young comet.

From your pic it looks like your fish is a young comet. I can't get any idea of it's size but it looks big enough to eat flakes but probably isn't used to them. Let me tell you about a recent experience with one of my fish.

This fish is LARGE, it came from a pond and must have just foraged for scraps and plant life. When I put flakes or pellets in the tank it would get all excited, it could smell the food, it would even chew some then spit it out. It didn't eat anything for 3 days although it was obviously hungry. Finally it ate some gelfood, basically that's mashed veg with a bit of sardine and set in gello. Now it is eating pellets too.

So I think both your fish and mine have something in common. Most likely your fish came directly from the fish hatchery where it lived in a huge vat and just ate what it could find lying around. Stuff that was all soft and soggy. Given time I'm sure it will adjust to commercial foods.

Ta. At the moment they don't give it a 2nd glance. Maybe if they become hungry enough....
