Full Version: Keeping Wattage Down

Ok another question (i'm just so excited!!)

How do you guys keep the wattage of the appliances down in your tank? I mean you've got your light (40w), filters (60w), air pump (5w) = approx 105watts! Thats more than a normal lightbulb and its running 24/7!

Are there any tricks to keeping the power down? Our electricity bills are already through the roof (mainly because of the fridge and its broken seals).

Edit: 1 thing i've thought of is getting 2 smaller internal filters that do 700L/hr, so that'll give me 1400L/hr for 20w instead of the 1000L/hr model which is already 20w.

At 105watts (an amp or a little less) running it 10 hours a day is one about kilowatt hour - at about 15 cents for 1 kilowatt hour - a little higher in California, a little less in Florida. The Midwest is kind of in between. So you will be running your tank for about 15-17 cents a day. Surely that cannot be too much?.....

You can run the lights for only 8 hours a day if you wish......but you might only save a penny or two a day doing that. biggrin.gif

I'm in australia and i worked it out to be about 14c/kWh, so yea i think i can afford that tongue.gif after talking with my partner he commented on how much the computers use... so its not much compared tongue.gif

I'm too excited tongue.gif I ask these silly kinds of questions!

I have a few canister filters which I think use more than the 'HOB' filters and I have 3 aquariums but I still dont it is costing me more than about $20 or a month. I am building a pond and that pump consumnes 180 watts an hour. I now I will get a slight jump in my electricity but I dont think it will be overwhelming. Besides I love my fish. I only keep the lights on in my aquarium for about 6 to 8 hours a day. I still think it is less expensive than other hobbies.

hehe, well i dont think i can have HOB's rme1964, because of the tank structure, they dont fit on the back of the tank! But i would love to get some....

I, too, do not think that there are any silly questions! It just means you are thinking about all kinds of things and looking at all sides of an issue.....That is GREAT! Keep looking at life and things just the way you are - that excitment and curiosity is what makes the world soooooo wonderful! biggrin.gif
