I noticed that my local Petsmart floats lemon rings in the goldie tanks and that they go wild eating them...
So I bought a lemon today, sliced off a ring, pulled out the seeds, squeezed out the excess juice, and floated it in my tank. Sanchez and Seymore are having fun eating it.... but my question is this...
How long should I leave it in? Five minutes? Ten? a half hour?

Ive never fed my goldies lemons, but when I feed them orange slices, I usually leave it in for about half an hour to an hour. Usually not any longer then that though. Just enough time so they can get off a few good chunks each.

Thanks! That's what I ended up doing. I felt bad taking it away... they were practically whining ...

Just make sure you dont over do the citrus fruits, they can really play havoc on your ph if its not stable enough

Hehehe! Sounds funny to watch! Have fun! Hey! Any one know how to feed peas to a goldfish? I don't. Little help?

I thaw out a few frozen peas in hot water. Then pop them out of their skins... and toss em in the tank. Sanchez will eat them out of my hand. Seymore isn't that secure with me yet.... but he's getting there!

It was probably oranges, not lemons. They look a bit lemony in the water.

DGF, whenever I feed peas, I mash them up after thawing them with my finger on a spoon or by putting the pea between two spoons and pretending the pea is a certain person I don't like...
Anyway, my fish are small and I do that so it's in bit sized, or, rather, inhalable chunks so they can't get it caught in their throats, even though despite my efforts, my largest still manages to swallow too much to fit down her throat in one swallow.

goldfish can chew. I only smush peas for the tropicals.
I have 4 large and 2 small goldies and usually put in 1/4 of an orange rubber banded to a rock and let em eat it till just the skin is left.
I agree... if you feed lemon and your water isn't well buffered, it could lower pH.

Do goldfish really have "teeth" in the back of their throats? I read this in a book

They chew food in their throat, not their mouths

In the book it said they are about as far back as the gills, but the only way you could see them is to cut them open after they have died.

LOL, that describes my fish perfectly! I've never seem 'em get as excited as they did the first time I gave them a slice of orange? Does anyone know if once a week is a good frequency for this treat?

Hey I fed my goldfish a strawberry the other day, and my tropicals also (though the tropicals didnt really eat a whole lot of it), the goldfish loved it, I just cut the strawberry in half and shaved off some really thin pieces and they ate it all up. This wont hurt them will it? It didnt seem too, can you feed them grapes do you think? Also how often can/should you feed them fruit?
