Hi there!

I know I seen a post somewhere on here say something about verticle lines on a male betta, but I forgot where it was and what it means.. Anyways, I was feeding my betta and my other fishies and noticed my betta had some thick verticle black lines alone his body when the light hit him right. Can somebody explain what it means? I can't remember sad.gif

Thanks!

Basicly it means she's ready to spawn. Horizontile are the opposite, stress/fear. Congrats, she's very content with you then, if you do spawn her read A LOT about spawning. Haha, there's so much to know I'm still learning.

LoL Thanks... Does it mean the same for a male betta? *pokes first post* He's a he tongue.gif

LoL I read about spawning already, and there's no way I'd try it. I'd love to, but I don't have the room, money, or a way to pass on the young (I only have one friend that is into fish also and I don't think they'd want a few hundred of them LoL).

A he? Hmm, well, maybe he's gay. smile.gif I'm pretty sure it means the same for males as they too get the horizontile bars when stressed.
I know what you mean by only having one fish friend close to home haha. It's a shame no one else wants to discuss filters gph and what fish are the most adorable.

LoL Okay, thanks smile.gif LoL Maybe he is, who knows! He likes to look at himself in my mirror tongue.gif LoL

Yeah *sigh* Even my friend that likes fish doesn't care to talk about things much -_- My grandma likes to, but I don't get to talk to her often, and she no longer has her fish (she did saltwater fish, but used to have some goldfish, bettas and guppies too so that's somethign we can talk about LoL). She was giving away her 150 gallon tanks and I wish my parents had told me because I would have taken one! She sold them both though *sniff* sad.gif Oh well.. No idea where I'd put a tank that big in my room o.0 LoL

dry.gif I get the "glazed-over" look when I start talking about my goldfish.. my boyfriend has had all kinds of fish at home ever since he was little, and either because of that or despite that, he is tired of hearin about em. He still ...appears.. to listen politely when I blab about my babies (and I try to limit my blabbing about them lately..), but he has this "brain on vacation" look. LOL

Soooo I sign on here and you alls get to hear about em! WOO! heartpump.gif

LoL I'm the same way when I talk about my fishies or my computer stuff to anybody. Everybody else sorta shuts their brains off or something *sigh* LoL

I've come to like this message board quite a bit smile.gif I'm not much of a chatter, but it has been a great help to me so far reguarding bits of info and help if I need it smile.gif

Can fish be gay? I never thought about it, but I respect thier choices.

I was kidding, but it does seem that way when males don't resond to any females. hah.gif

Can your betta see other male bettas (or similar fish) from his tank or is housed with them?

Sometimes males will display vertical bars if they feel threatened by other males. They will do it to pretend to be a female!! Very weird..

Or, he could be gay!lol!!

"Can your betta see other male bettas (or similar fish) from his tank or is housed with them?"

Nope, the only thing he can see from his tank is his reflection in the mirror I have propped up behind his tank. It's been there for a very long time though and he's never showed those verticle lines before. After a few days he lost interest with the mirror too LoL.
Jessica13
The mirror would do it! Is it there all the time? If it is i'd try and move it as its probably stressing him out thinking that there's another betta there all the time that he cant get away from! It has exactly the same effect as having another betta there which would explain the lines smile.gif
atryeu
The mirror is there all the time, but I usually have it covered with a folded piece of printer paper. I uncover it only once or twice a week for a few hours but he's not interested in the mirror anymore... He used to look at it and flare up the first few times LoL...

I've been doing this with the mirror though since my last betta that passed on *sniff*. I've had this one already for almost 4 or 5 months now and he's never shown those verticle lines until the other day. I haven't seen them at all again since that one night.

LoL That's the weird thing though.... I have no other bettas (male or female) and it cannot see my guppies in my tank. The mirror has been covered with my piece of paper for the last week. Weird! LOL

Thanks for the information about it smile.gif Still haven't seen the bars again. At least I'll sort of know what's going on if I do though!
