How many times a day do you feed your fishes? I have received conflicted answers to this. I have 5 goldfishs in a 30 gallon tank.

first of all (and your going to hear this a lot) your tank is overstocked, just thought i'd get that out of the way
now for your question, feed your fish twice daily (MAX) and only feed them what they can eat in a few minutes otherwise your ammonia will spike (which is not good for your fish)...hope this helps
By the way what do you feed your fish?

Yes you need 10 gallons per fish. That being said I feed my fish with the plants 2 times a day to help keep them from eating on the plants. I feed my goldfish in the tank with no plants once a day.

I feed mine two small meals. Morning and night. The fish in the planted tank snack on algae all day, though

just an after thought. Ensure you soak the fish food too, before adding to the tank.

Nick - whilst I'd never say get rid of a fish, they will be a lot happier in a larger tank - either seperate a couple to another tank, or just get a larger tank to hold all 4. I know this means an outlay - but it's always worth it, and your fish will live a happier and longer life because of it!

Suggestion - if your poor, like me, try getting one of those tubs from nnnnnn. The clear ones are usually between 6-10 $$ depending on the size you need. Then you can grab a filter and hang it on ther back and your good to go! Of course, that IS until you see this goreous beauty at the store that you just HAVE to have......

Hi,
I feed my fish (both the goldies and the tropicals) every second day. I used to feed them once a day but I find that every 2nd day keeps the tank cleaner as there not 'passing' as much(!) and also on the non-feeding day they are very good at cleaning the tank for me! I feed mine flakes, but I never soaked them first. I am going to start doing that and I'm going to get them some sinking pellets.
I am very interested in feding fish veg, but I am not sure how to go about it. That's why I'm on here!

Its really better to break up your fish's feedings into several small ones throughout the day rather than one large one. Its especially healthier for fancies who may tend to overeat and get swimming problems. I feed my fish 3 to 4 meals throughout the day but 1) I have an understocked tank (6 in a 100 gallon, some babies), 2) I have a lot of filtration on that tank, and 3) I am very good on keeping up my water changes.
I think a lot of people actually underfeed their fish. YOu should be feeding them at least every day! Fish are opportunistic feeders which means when the foods there, they'll eat it because theyre not sure when the next meal is coming along. So its a good idea to spread the feedings throughout the day. I use sinking food too, so they can constantly pick around the tank and find little nibbles that way too.

Hmmmm
I would never feed my fish every day, overfeeding is a big problem that kills goldfish a lot. A well kept tank will have food available in it for the fish to find. Also, I have a well planted tank with wood and such where they'll find algae etc. It makes fish more active and they are having to find their food at times which keeps them busy.
"Fish are opportunistic feeders which means when the foods there, they'll eat it because theyre not sure when the next meal is coming along." This isn't a problem for me (and shouldn't be for anyone) as I'm in control of how much they get. Also, wouldn't this go against the notion of feeding them several times a day? They'll eat whether they're hungry or not and this way they are given more opportunity.
Different strokes for differnt fish folks!

The problem I find with feeding my fish more than two meals a day, is that even if I only want to give each fish a very small amount, there is always the aggressive ones, that manage to hog way more than their share. I am afraid of overfeeding those fish.
Any ideas?

touchofsky, I think the best thing to do would be to get a 'feeding only bucket' and put aggressive fish in that bucket while feeding smaller fish meals. Then feed aggressives seperate meals.
