Full Version: Dirty Looking Koi

Another question for the evening! My favorite koi, Skeletor, used to be ghostly beautiful to look at from above.....he is a slate grey with a white pattern that when viewed from above, looks like a skeleton! Lately though the white looks like it could use a good wash. Sometimes it even has a peachy tone to it, and the "skull" area looks like it has a little green algae on it.
I'm a novice koi owner so I haven't had the experience of watching one turn colors. Is this what is happening, or is something growing on my fish?

It is difficult to diagnose without seeing the fish or getting a scrape and scope. I'm going to take a stab. Is there anyway you can take a couple of pictures and post them?

The peachy area, it comes and goes? How large is this area? Could one say it's a peachy patch?

The green algae look on the head is just that. Your fish must have gotten an open wound which then got invaded by fungus. The fungus has trapped algae in the wound. If the fish is swimming around and eating like normal it should recover. If the fish isn't acting healthy you may want to take him out of the pond and put him in a quarantine tank. Slowly raise the temps to upper 70's and add 98%salt at .1% per day until at .3% This should do the trick, by raising the temp you'll get the fish immune system going. There immune system doesn't kick in good until the water temp is up around 75. That is why this time of year is no fun for those of us coming out of winter in to spring. The slower the temps rise the scarier it can be if the fish show signs of sickness.

You also might want to think about feeding medicated koi food for two weeks.

If you put the fish in qt and up salt to .3% you'll want to leave him there for at least two weeks. You'll also want to send buddy along with him to the hospital, they don't like being alone. It'll help the healing process wink.gif

I just read your other post. Should have read it first. I am going to answer your questions in the other thread. I didn't realize that you only had your pond three months.
