Ok, so I've finally got the medigold so I can treat my 1.5-inch calico fantail for dropsy, but the pellets are huge. I cut them into smaller bits, but they're really hard, and she spits them out and tries to eat them again. Will they eventually soften up so she can eat them? And also, how much and how often do I feed her?

Medigold is easy to break into pieces, and these pieces do soften very quickly in water. Within about 2 minutes, they will be soft enough for your goldy to gum them down. I have been told it is best to not soak the Medigold first, before feeding, as it can cause some loss of medication. I do not soak it. I do think however, if your goldie has an initial interest in the food, but looses interest and stops trying to eat it, even after it has softened, then perhaps soaking it would be best - at least for a bit. Getting the fish to eat the food is the most important thing. It cannot help if it is not in the fish......

It is suggested that you feed as much Medigold as you can get into your fish in every 24 hour period - I used to know the percentage of the fish's weight, but I am not finding it anywhere at this moment and it is not in my head. But I know that it is a substantial amount - as much as you can get into the fish. Unfortunately, when a fish is not doing well, it does not digest as well and the nutrients and medications are not absorbed as well as they perhaps should be. So, simply plug as much into your fish as he will accept.

I generally try to feed my fish that are on MediGold or MetroMeds 3 times a day, with a slightly smaller amount of food than normal. I watch carefully to make sure that there is not a lot of waste. Since, when my fish are not doing to well, I usually end up changing the water far more than normal, I am capable of ridding the tank of uneaten food more quickly than normal, too.

A fish that is too small to eat one pellet at a time would probably only need about 2 pellets at a meal - 3 times a day is a guess..... at least that is what I would aim at. If he eats more - GREAT!

Good luck. smile.gif I have had MediGold turn things around very quickly for very sad fishies! smile.gif

Thanks for the help.

She tried to eat it at first, and then spit it out a few minutes later. occasionally she will go back and try again, but ultimately doesn't eat it. Even if you lose medication by soaking them, I think it would be better if she eats it that way. Oh well, I'll just keep watching.

2 pellets 3 times a day? That's a lot! I usually give her that much for a whole day! laugh.gif

Wait, what do you mean "easy"? THey're very hard. Every time I cut one another piece goes flying off into my kitchen somewhere. I'm suspicious, because the seal was broken when I opened it. COuld it have dried out? Its a very dark brown, and it's almost a reddish brown, but hardly.

Hi,
That is the right color for medigold. I never had to break it up so I am not sure if the hardness means it is stale.

Call goldfishconnection and ask about the broken seal. If it is 8oz, it seems to me that they open a larger bag (20oz) and fill a smaller container so it wouldn't be sealed anyway. But I am sure they have an 800 number that you can call and ask.

Good luck with your fish. smile.gif

2 broken pellets, perhaps? blink.gif

I am soooo used to feeding my monsters - they each eat about a teaspoon of pellets a day - and veggies in the evening. laugh.gif

Well, I mean the bottle had a "sealed for your protection" thing on it, but it was ripped open. Oh well. I'll have my dad call the place.

Well, I put 2 pellets in this morning, cut into tiny pieces, and it's gone now and the tank is full of pieces of poo. I guess that means she ate it! laugh.gif

There is so much poo in the tank now, I have to siphon it tonight. She's swimming around a lot more, and is barely lopsided.

Im sorry to undig this thread, but I've heard that Medi-gold cannot be used concurrently with Maracyn 2. Any inputs about this?
