Full Version: Getting A Pond!

Ok I've been hinting at my Mom for like a year that she should let me put in a goldy pond, but all she ever said was she wanted a real one. Well tonight I asked her if she could get me a money order at the postoffice since I have to work and stuff, and she was like why?!? And I said for some plants I bought online, and she was like maybe we should put in a goldfish pond!!! Wooooohooooo finally, I have turned her to the goldy side, muaaahahahah! lol!
Now I have a few ideas for the pond, but I'd like some tips from the experts. I live in western NY so I will definately have snow and freezing temps. so would and above ground or inground pond be best? which would be the cheapest? What type of filter would be the cheapest easiest to set up? I was thinking of having like a powerhead pump the water into a filter box withe like bio balls and plants and stuff in it and then let the water flow back out at the other end through a pipe or something. I was only wondering roughly how much it will cost to put a pond in? I'm not looking to go all fancy, just something basic and easy to maintain.
Wooooh I'm still just soooooo excited!! krazy.gif

I'll leave the details of cold climate ponds to the experts other than I'm sure you would need an inground pond to help prevent/delay freeze over.

Some things you need to consider before others can advise you :-

a) How many fish and what size pond are you considering?

cool.gif If required to bring fish indoors for winter where will they live? Your capacity to house them inside in winter should be taken into account when planning the size of your pond and number of fish.

thanks all biggrin.gif
I probably will be doing an inground pond, just because it will the easier to "hide" with plants and stuff. Not sure how big I want it yet, probably at least a few hundred gallons if not more. I'll base the number of fish I get on how ever many gallons it ends up being. I definately have room if they need to be brought in during the winter. I can put them in the basement probably in rubbermade containers.
