We recently got a golden dojo loach and just love him! He's so unique and just a lot of fun. I read up on these guys a little bit before we got him and mostly what I read was that they are active critters. Well, I never thought it'd be like this. He is swims constantly, back and forth, and seems a little....well... nuts. Is this typical for these guys? Also, any special treats that they seem to like really well?

He's a lot of fun and we really are enjoying him!

i dont know much about these guys but devs will hopefully see this post as she has a few.
they react to the weather i believe, so if its going to change then they get more active.

I had 2 of these and it is normal for them to act kinda nutty krazy.gif . I fed mine frozen bloodworms and brine. They loved it. They also would eat the goldfish crumb food.

I'm sad to say both died due to fin rot or something ill.gif .
Good luck with your new friend biggrin.gif

Hi,
Congratulations on your new loach. Also, they act very nutty when they are put in new surroundings and will constantly swim back and forth and up and down. I think they are scoping out their new surroundings smile.gif As a previous poster mentioned, they also respond to atmospheric changes and that will make they swim around excitedly. Make sure there are no openings in the lid of your tank that they could get through. They can manage to get through the smallest of openings.

They are real clowns, and fun to watch. Mine love gel food. They can suck back a piece of that in record time. They can even beat the goldfish laugh.gif

Great info! Thanks guys!

I do have a couple other questions.... I want to make sure I am doing everything right for him. What type of temperatures do they like? I am noticing that they are eating goldfish food but I've seen others house them with tropicals. Which is best and what temperatures can they withstand?

I'm glad to hear that they are just nuts. smile.gif I just love this little guy! We have named him Mojo. smile.gif

Hey,you gotta love those loaches!!!!! Dojo's are kind of known to like colder water temps, thus being one reason why people associate them with Goldfish. The thing is,most people have a heater on their goldie tank, as I do ,to keep a little stability on temps,so my tank water ends up being around 75-76 degrees. I also have 2 in another tank where the temp sometimes is closer to 78 though, and they also seem to do okay.I know people that have them in temps of 68. I think a happy medium can be found somewhere there,as long as the temps are consistent. Loaches will try to eat just about anything! I had a green bean in the tank the other day for a snail, and one of the loaches came over to check it out.All you saw was whisker's moving all over the green bean.I actually couldn't tell if he ended up eating any of though because he started a game of " Dodge Ball Goldies" with it! ohmy.gif rofl3.gif One more thing,Loaches adore other loache's company,so you may want to consider at least one more. You think he's crazy now???? Wait until he has a partner to hang out with! laugh.gif

My dojos share a tank with two fancy goldfish and the room they are in is a warm room where the temperatures are around 70 - 72 f., year round. They do well at room temperature for me, but as Devs mentioned, I think they are flexible when it comes to temperatures.

Mine eat ProGold goldfish pellets, peas, homemade gel food (both tomato & tuna and pea/veggie and tuna), spirulina pellets (soaked), shrimp pellets (soaked), and other veggies and freezed dried food that I give the goldfish.

Welcome, Mojo!

Oh good! I'm so glad to hear that they are that flexible. Mojo is in a more tropical tank with temps around 77 so I feel better knowing that he'll be OK. He is in the newest of our six tanks with a twig catfish, a hillstream loach, and an angel fish. I was worried about the angel and am still keeping an eye on the two of them. When introduced, the angel came over and got as close as he could and I thought he was going to attack the hillstream (named Ray, who joined at the same time as Mojo). and then he went over to Mojo. He got very close and I almost interveined but once he got his share of looking, he turned around and went about his business. I have not noticed any of the fish pay any attention to another since then. Michael, the angel, is very curious and checks everything out but hasn't seemed to bother anything. smile.gif The tank is a 30 gallon. I think I am about at my limit for stocking or very close or even possibly overboard. Would another dojo do OK in this size tank or am I overstocked already? I am so happy to have FINALLY found other folks who know about these awesome fish!!
