I am finally moving my two black neon tetras, ruby and rummert, out of the goldfish tank and into something new. I am thinking about a five gallon. I will probably get them two more friends because I heard they do best in groups of four or more. They seem perfectly happy by themselves tho..should I still get them some friends? Will this be too much for the five gallon? I don't really want to get a ten gallon because of cost, space and I have to think about going to college soon. I picked out a few kits from petsmart of various sizes. Even though I need to know the right size of tank for these little guys, I'm looking for opinions for the quality of these tanks:

Ten gallon

aquascene

five gallon

five gall

smile.gif I think they would do great in the 5 gallon, i would put live plants
and make it very nice and 'attractive.I would get at least another 4
or more. They get rather stressed in small groupes. The bigger the group the better. I wouldn't worry about the space really unless your going to get like 13 more blink.gif, with waterchanges and filtration they will do great, good luck,

Are you sure 6 tetras would be okay in a five gallon? The tetras I've got are supposed to get to be 2 inches..one inch each right now. I'm not sure if they will grow too much bigger. I'd love that many, but I'm afraid that it will be too many for such a small tank. Would only five be oka? The two I've got absolutely love their ten gallons each and makes me sad to think about downgrading them. But if they will be happiest AND healthiest with three or four friends in a five gallon, then that would be perfect.

Also, does anyone know if Black Neons and Red/Blue Neons will school together? I'd like to get some of those.

oh sorry i read wrong blink.gif, well im not sure, maybe get another 3
so you have 5 i think that would be best. Im not sure about the
2 types of neons schooling together...

tetras do well together, 5gal. is fine for them, but 10gal. is better, just have them with some friends and theyll be happy.

Does anyone know about the quality of the tank kits I have posted above? If I can find room, I may get the ten gallon kit because it is only 50 dollars. But I'm afraid that it might be a crappy kit since it is so inexpensive. I need help ._.

i dont believe in tank kits but thats just me. all i do is if theres a 10g tank, ill go buy it. even if it doesnt come with heater, etc. you can always get the whole assembly stuff for cheaper. some 10g kits already have the things you have in your house, such as ammo. lock etc.

I've been looking into bigger kits for a little while and I've found that most of the time they give you the short end of the stick as far as the quality of the filter and other stuff goes. If you have your heart set on a kit, I'd recommend the Eclipse systems. I have the system six and it's great; it's much more expensive and you get less, but it comes with a great Marineland filter. I added a heater and bubbler to mine very easily.

Thanks kortniee for the advice. Do you know if they make a ten gallon kit?

They do have a 12-gallon kit. It's only $70 right now at Big Al's. With shipping, that'd be $79, which is still less than the $90 Petsmart will charge you.

I forgot about this last night, but they also sell hoods with the filter and light in them that you can stick on top of a standard tank. They have one for 10 gallon tanks at Big Al's for $55; then you could just stick a cheap 10-gallon from wal-mart under it and it'd be pretty much the same as the eclipse system. Just another option for you...

Ohhh! You know that was the most perfect advice...you don't know how much!!! Well you'll know after I tell you lol. I already have a ten gallon cheapie tank from walmart...with no suitable top or lights. The top wouldn't fit with the filter I have..it hands on over the back and makes a waterfall. Still pretty pricey for the top AND the new tank..but thanks! biggrin.gif

Heh... you're welcome. I'm a compulsive online comparison shopper, which leaves me with a lot of information that's only useful in a few situations. I'm glad I could help you. biggrin.gif
