There was a story on the news tonight about a small child that wondered outside into the families backyard and drowned in the pond they had there....
Just a heads up for any of you wiht small kids and ponds!
mom and I were talking bout this, and were like, wow, never would think about that, most people only worry bout their swimming pools!

Yeah, thats the unfortunate truth, that kids and ponds do not mix.
It would be a good idea to use the same precautions than if one would with a swimming pool - locked door, and some sort of enclosure around. Of course, that would take away from the looks of the pond, but its better safe than sorry....

My dad always used to say "you can drown in half a bucket of water" and where children are concerned that is true.

yep, anywhere there is water there is a danger for small kids. For anyone whom has small kids they make a band to goes around the wrist and when it gets wet it sets off an alarm in the house. It looks like a wrist watch. It looked like a good investment. Sorry I don't know whom makes it or where it was that I saw the advertisement. I don't have kids so I only skimmed over it.

Very True....children can actually drown in 1 inch of water!!.....scares me to death....My parents are getting a pond so I think we will have to be keeping an eye on my son very closely, otherwise have to send him outside wearing water wings?!?!
It makes me nervous but theres not much I can do but to be outside with him every second!!
Can you put a cover on them at all or is that only for the winter months?

I read about this on another forum.
My mom was always scared my sister would drown in the dog bowl. So he never had water out all the time, lol the poor thing would have to bark at the sink when he wanted a drink! lol
I would think that if you had a pond or a small child you would watch them constantly. The girl who drowned was very young looking, i would say not old enough to be outside unsuperised, im not saying it was any ones fault, because i know it only takes a second for an accident to happen, but i dunno, my child would be no where near my pond. Even if i over looked the drowning, id be worried little fingers and cookies would be in with my fish. I feel bad for her family though, poor little one. - Meg

I hear these kind of stories all the time, and always makes me sad. My son is 15 months, and i worry constantly about everything. it only takes a minute for a small child to wonder off, and get into something they shouldnt be in, and get seriously hurt, or even be killed.
We are planning on setting up a pond, and ive been worried about my son getting into it. But we dont allow him outside enless were right there with him! But its true, it takes a second for anything to happen!
Those parents must be soo upset. I couldnt even begin to imagine!
That wrist band thing sounds like a really neat idea. I also saw these things at the store the other day that you put on your door, and it has an alarm on it, that when you turn it on, and if the door gets opened, the alarm goes off. Would be nice for if you had little kids trying to sneak out.

the child that drowned in the pond was 15 months also.....
I never heard of those wrist bands, but sounds like a very good idea if you had small kids (thankfully I dont
