Full Version: Is This Normal?

Hi there..I have checked all over the place but cant seem to find anyting similar? I " saved" 2 goldfish about 4 months ago from the pet shop while buying dog food ( go figure!) felt sorry for all the comets crammed into the " feeder" tank so 2 came home with me....of course they grew quite rapidly, so, $100 or so later, my 10 cent rescues have now been moved into a 3 gallon tank....they are both just basic comets ( I think?) One is mostly white with a bit of orange on the head ( and pretty blue eyes!) and the other is a copper colour....I just came back from a 1 week vacation leaving them in care of my room mate...I had also just finished a session of tetracycline as the copper one ( renamed " STUBBY") had fin rot...the white one that was pretty chubby is now skinny?...Then I noticed eggs stuck all over the sides of the tank...so he is obviously a she....bringing me to the point of this.....she is extremely red around the base of her body where it meets her tail, it looks very painful although not giving her any problems as she is racing around as usual and eating well. Is this something that would be normal for a fish that has just spawned and is maybe just more noticable due to the fact she is white? ..I did a 50% water change as soon as I came back ( was only away 5 days) but not sure what else to do???
Thanks, and sorry for being so long winded!

First off, welcome to Kokos!

I think it was a typo, but 3 gallons is too small for goldies, especailly commons. But again, Im sure it was a typo (3 gallon...100$?)

My goldfish has gotten red around her vent before after laing a clutch of eggs. It has never looked painful to me, but it did look swollen and uncomfortable. Id say keep an eye on it and in a few days if the swelling doesnt go down, we can figure out whut it is. Some one with more knowledge on the breeding subject could maybe give you more info, but in my expeirience its normal. Though yours sounds a bit more painful looking... You could salt the water perhaps? I dont want to say anything for sure though. Good Luck! -Meg
