I've read that goldfish can snack on snails too so maybe it was okay

Yes i think they can eat your snail... Once i was in my lfs and i saw some 3'' shubunkins shredding and eating the ramshorns >:(

Goldfish will eat anything that will fit into their mouths.
Also when there is a sick or injured fish or snail, he becomes "food" for other fish. That is another good reason to quarantine a sick fish.

I bought a plant yesterday and found a real small snail in my tank afterwards. Presumably he came with the plant, but today I can't him anywhere. He was the pefect size for a goldy snack...

Holy cow! For some reason, even though I'm in a goldfish forum, I saw "gf" and thought "girlfriend" and totally cringed. Glad I got that cleared up.
My betta ate a snail, and he was fine. A little constipated, but alright nonetheless.

maybe your goldfish is french and was looking for some good es cargo! I think he got it! hahahaha!

I hope you weren't to attatched to your snail...
