My beautiful oranda I just bought came with a little white coloration on his lip. Today I noticed his lip was damaged in just that spot. I added a dose of melafix to the tank. That should be fine, right? I mean, I will of course continue for five days or until there is no sign, but just to be sure.

Do you have a quarantine tank? I got fish with three separate diseases, I think, and pretty soon they all had all three things. 5 out of 6 of my fishies died.
QT = necessary.
That said, if you caught it quickly you should be alright, though you're going to have to ask more knowledgeable people about the best medicine to use.

Danielle,
Does the white spot looks like a bit of cottonwool? It sounds like mouth rot. It is casued by columnaris flexibactor. Antibiotics is the way to go. Forget melafix, it is not up to the job. You need sulfa drugs, tetracycline, Maracyn I and II or Furan-2.

No, there's no fuzziness, just white color and it looks like it's got a tad of some sort of rot. Maracyn I and II, you said? Can I use just one or should I use both at the same time?

Also, this isn't something that can just be cured with salt, is it?

If it's still small, you can try adding salt, but I would switch to something else (after diluting the salt) if it keeps getting worse after a few days.

I have a fish that is currently battling mouth rot.It started out as something white,a bit swollen.Tried treating it with 0.3% salt and pellets soaked in antibiotics but he didn't improve and just gotten worst to the point that part of his mouth protruded

It really looks awfully bad, looks like part of his mouth is gonna fall off.I have now treated his tank with meds to see if it will heal.
So,if I were you,you might want to add the meds now before it progresses bad like my fish

Just my opinion though!

Maracyn 1 and 2 can work together. If you want to cover your bases, I would use both at the same time.
UC, I wish we can get Maracyn 1 & 2 in Japan.

How is the little guy going?

I thought columnaris can be cure with 1.5%-3% salt baths... ,aybe im wrong...
Captk, What's the UK med that can cure columnaris or mouth rot

PG, sap can be killed with 1.5%+ salt dip. Columnaris is a bacteria. Salt can help to control it though.
Interpet's Anti Fungus and Bacteria No.8 is worth a try.

You mean a 1.5% salt concentration in the tank?

Or a 1.5% concentration salt dip? Im alittle confused
Thanks for the info

Sorry, PG, I mean salt dips at concentration of 1.5% and above. 1.5% in the tank will have them doing cartwheels!!

Okay, I got some Maracyn. He's doing okay, but his mouth is a bit worse. It won't dissolve in the water. Is it not supposed to?
captk
May 15 2005, 07:26 PM
Dissolve the maracyn in a cup of water first. This is a slow process, crunching the pill up prior will help speed things up a little.

Okay, three days into treatment and no improvement. Should I be worried

? I reeeaaaaaallllly don't have any money for any more medication, and I'm pretty sure my dad will go berserk if we need to go buy just one more medication.
