I'll start off with that I do not know much about bettas. I've never had one. So I could be wrong here. That's why I'm posting.

One of my coworkers recently brought in a desktop aquarium. She has 2 bettas housed in the small tank with a divider of course. She has 2 plants in the small tank, one on each side. These bettas barely have room to turn around in this thing. This tank seems too small for one fish, let alone two. It is very similar to the tank found here: Betta Tank This tank only holds 1 QUART of water! Am I wrong for thinking this is way too small to house 2 bettas? When I researched bettas, I found that you should use a minimum of 1 gallon for each betta. But I'm sure she got it at the pet store and the "experts" there told her this product was great. I'm just glad that it wasn't goldies. I would have had to have said something right away.

Please give me advice on whether this is too small for 2 fish and if so, how should I go about informing her that she really needs to do something about it, for the fish's sake. This lady is really nice so I don't want to offend her, but I really can't even stand to look at this thing sitting on her desk with those 2 poor little fishies sad.gif

sad.gif Man,I'm feeling you. I could never watch that either. It can be done-it is done....Is it healthy for the Betta's? In MPO, I don't think so at all.Betta's need at least one gal. of good clean water that's changed out a few times a week with water conditioner,& matching the temps that the fish are in.They need some kind of room to move around in.Geez, these people need to put theirselves in their Betta's place! Could you imagine living in a tight, small closet where you couldn't even straighten your legs out, stretch,or turn around? crap.gif Your co-worker needs at least a 5 gal.tank. Heck, even 2.5 would be better than what they're in now. WHat kind of friendly terms are you on with her? I would let her know that keeping them in that small container will bring alot of extra work on her.Their water will have to be changed on a Daily Basis,I think I'd also tell her that there's alot of wrong information out there about these fish and that they actually bloom when put in the right conditions-swimming more, playing in bubbles. I'd inform her that they tend to get alot of health problems-finrot and such from being in those small container's because people don't realize how fast that little bit of water can become a sesspool of waste. In the container she has them in,all they'll probably do ,is sit there. That's about it....How unfortunate for the poor fish. Those five gal. tanks run about 40.00,but I've gotten quite a few of them on e-Bay for well under 20.I'm sure if she looks around, she can get a nice sized tank. Why do people use fish for decorating? If they want to look at something colorful, they should hang some art! Good luck-I sure hope that you can sway her on this. smile.gif

Hi, I generrally keep my betta in a two gallon tanks with a bubbler system and his tank is gennerraly ranging in temperature from 75 to 80 degrees. I think that this as far as I have seen is the best thing for the betta.

You could maybe talk to her about it, telling her bettas need a little bit more room, and say you don't mean to be rude, you are just and animal lover and want them to have long healthy lives, maybe buy her two little 1/2 to 1 gallon bowls as gifts. Tell her about your fish, and all the things you have learned on Koko's site. Hope that helps... smile.gif
