I do, but mostly the ones 110 gl and up. They are very sturdy things, have an "almost" bottom drain and are very good priced....

I use a 200g+ one as a patio pond although it is not the Rubbermaid brand. Gee Andrea, I wish my one had a bottom drain.

I have one, but I only use it for a hospital/quarentine tank. If I set one up permanently, my fiance might be a bit upset. Thats a wonderful idea fishmerised, to use one as a pond out back. Ive been wanting a pond really bad, with some really nice plants and what not... but never thought of that!! Im going to have to try that! I have two commons that I just dont have room for anymore (I wont them at the fair last year, and they are HUGE now), and I bet they would LOVE that!
I used to have a large rubbermaid that I used as a hamster cage for along time. He loved it in there.

i'm so glad i found this thread! i was justl ooking online a couple days ago for a large ( 100 gal +) rubbermaid to use as a pond. i too have 2 commons who have outgrown my tank and i want to have a pond, but all the prefab ponds here are just oo much and we're aren't all that gifted to build one ourselves. so i thought of the people i've read using the rubbermaid. i couldn't find any online! none! anyone have any suggestions?? i even checked at walmart and they didn't have any big ones. i'm going to have to take the commons back to the store if i can't find a pond type solution.

don't want to do that if i don't have to. i would love one that is 150-200 gals!
thanks!

i've been wondering about making ponds out of rubbermaid containers as well. is it possible??
what kind of filter do you guys use with a rubbermaid container? I recently set up a 10 g as a hospital tank but couldnt put a HOB filter, so I ended up buying an internal filter.

well, i checked out walmart on-line, target, kmart rubbermaid, and i did a go0gle for them and checked a bunch of those sites. but i just can't seem to find what i'm looking for.
as for a filter, i haven't decided yet. i used the HOB filter from my 45 when i had to move it. i set up a 15 gal to hold my fishies while we put down a new floor and had to take down thier tank. it didn't fit quite right and had to put something under it to support it. but it worked just fine. but putting it outside as a pond i don't think that would work. so i think i'm going to go look at the threads of people who have made thier own and see if i can mangle, i mean manage making one. but if not i might go on ebay or something and get a second hand pond filter of some kind.
if i locate one i'll let you all know.

I was seriously thinking about making a few weekends projects of making a outdoor pond from rubbermaids....
then i relized that the 2-3 weeks of sub-zero temps we get would freeze the poor fellas

perhaps I can talk my mom into wanting a pond

I wonder what type of filtration system Ranchugirl uses?
I went for a pump and gravity return biological filtration - cheaper than a cannister filter of the same capacity.

i thought i was the only one, i have a 300 Gallon rubber maid (that took forever to find) but I use it as a pond out back. It was sooo much cheaper then buying an acctually pond kit, or trying to make one... and you would never know the difference!

Purplepimple, where did you find a 300gal tub!??? you lucky duck you! so is it free standing? did you put it in the ground? or did you build something around it? i'm trying to figure out what to do with it once i get it( if i ever find one). i have small children and am a little afraid to put it in the ground. i don't want the baby to toddle over and drown! so i think i would like it above ground. also if you don'tmind, how much did it cost you?
Fishmerised, i see your's is above ground. but i can't see it very clearly on my computer. did you build something around it? the other thing is that we are probably going to move in the next yr and i don't want anything permanent. i want to be able to take it with me.

Hi cyn, we have ours undercover on the back patio. The patio is screened for flies/mosquitoes. We had that pine fence made to divide the patio in half so the kids and the dogs wouldn't play in the pond or "bbt" big black tub.

edit: there are more pics in the koi/pond forum.

Annette, I have different kind of filters on my rubbermaids - some are regular 20-30 gl rubbermaids, filled with media and tons of plants (DataGuru was the inspiration for that one

), then there are the round green ones from Tetra, or something called Fishmate filters. They come with and without an UV...

As for anybody looking for bigger rubbermaids, try
those guys from TractorSupply. They come from 110 gl upwards up to 300 gl, and you can see the little black drain about 2 inch above the bottom. Those Tractor Supply stores are all over the US (and hopefully in Australia for Annette...

) In two of mine I just put the plug in, while in one I got a little more "sophisticated" with a ball valve.
Not that it makes any difference, I can't use the bottom drains now - the patio area has outdoor carpet....

IF you go to a Feed store or other farming store, look for a water trouth <sp> as they are great for tanks for commons... just go to the nearest farm supply store or look online...
